Barbiturates were legal and OTC in the first half of the 20th century.
Just think about that. Stefan Zweig, Austrian writer, ctb via barbiturates.

Depends on the country, In thailand you can buy Xanax and many other stuff over the country and they have to history of people misusing them, same as Amsterdam. Most things are legal and barely you see a drug addict. So that’s would be a great idea actually.

I think in addition to society wanting people to suffer, greed, and control over it's citizens, from the medical perspective, there isn't a legitimate use outside of causing death and bringing peace to the patient. Therefore, as the (pro-life) government and society sees bringing dignified peace and ending suffering to be detrimental to their pro-life values, they banned such substances from human use as they want humans to be alive as long as possible so that they can milk as much money as they can from said patient(s).

I do agree about legalizing them for euthanasia and as a way to have a peaceful, dignified death on one's own terms.

I wouldn't see anything nefarious about restricting access to certain substances. I don't think it had much to do with suicide prevention rather than accident prevention. Preventing suicide was just a bonus.

I live in Switzerland where euthanasia is legal for the terminally ill.
At least for a hefty price. So, even the terminally ill have no way out if they don't have the money.
After several years of "careful case evaluation" to assess whether the patient's request is justified or not (meaning they use the time to squeeze out money from the patient) , the patient is allowed to self-administer a lethal dosis of Pentobarbital (orally or intravenously) and die a fairly peaceful death.

These same companies (Exit, Dignitas, Pegasos...) also receive thousands of requests per year from other people who are terminally ill. But because it's not their bodies failing, it's "not justified and morally inacceptable" because mental illness "can always be cured".
There is not a single recorded case of legal euthanasia for a mentally ill person in Swiss history. Or any assisted suicide organization for that matter.

I think making deadly substances illegal makes sense not because they can lead to suicides but because they can also be used for homicides. We all love our right to die but think about how many people would be killed and lose their right to live if any fatal substances were more easily accessible.

Unfortunately even assisted suicide might always face challenges in getting legalized. All it takes is one person being coerced into committing suicide by an abuser or mob leader to make people scared enough to overlook the benefits.

Yes. I've heard many times that places with the least restrictions have the least problems with addiction, drug-related crimes, etc.

It is like with all "highly developed" first world countries filled with monsters: Psychological trauma is regarded as mere maladjustment that can be fixed like tubes by a plumber and NOT taken seriously in any way. I have ten years of experience with the mental health systems in Switzerland. They are a fucking joke.

As for euthanasia. I asked my doctor once if I had any chance of being accepted and he immediately said to not even try. Waste of time because I would NEVER be accepted.

I can definitely relate. Many of us would be half as broken if at least we were taken seriously. For me, the worst thing is the sense of guilt we are stuffed with on a daily basis, even by so-called professionals haha

They've been making suicide harder and harder to commit so that suicidal people have to go to more and more desperate means to kill themselves. No more barb ODs. No more sticking your head in an oven or running your car in your garage. Now they're even making SN impossible to get.
