Is it really mostly because of social media? My gen had MySpace, but it was just something to do at home after school. I don't remember anyone taking it very seriously

Some are bullied on social media. Also emotions and hormones when you are in your teens. Depression.
(Never got over that)
Some may see early on that if they are only qualified for shitty mcjobs their entire life, why stick around.
(My entire life)
Just a few thoughts.

This was an issue long before social media. Though the latter enables uniquely hellacious situations to follow a young person 24/7.

Factors include destabilised cognition during hormonal changes, bullying, identity crises, conflicts with authorities and the novelty of dramatic relationships with others combined with inexperience. Plus any unique challenges such as poor parenting.

In bygone eras, it was socially unacceptable for women to be unmarried, which benefited lower quality men, as did sexism in employment and wages.

Plus, the world was less obsessed with victimhood cults.

I really think it can be as simple as teens are more impulsive, quick to intense emotion and quick to be overwhelmed by intense emotion while not having yet developed advanced coping mechanisms just by virtue of being... well, teens. I'm sure the prevalence of social media and the intensification of a culture of comparison and competition certainly hasn't helped. If a child is not too stable or savvy, it is incredibly easy to stumble upon people online who want to take advantage of you or communities that serve as echo chambers for awful ideas or breeding grounds for all kinds of neuroses like EDs. Sad to say, this site can sometimes veer into that territory too.

Oh yeah worth noting that many teens don't really have as much autonomy as adults do, so they have to put up with all manner of bullshit from whatever family they got randomly assigned at birth. Incredibly disempowering, especially if your family is horribly abusive. Of course, for many, it persists into adulthood if they're not able to leave...

More pressure to find a stable partner plus no online dating which removes the necessity to meet partners through in human interaction.

I think that social media has made it more visible and made many of the issues that teenagers deal with more visible also. Even before social media, the teeage years are pure hell. Our hormones are going wacky and we are full of insecurities at that time - and bullying sure compounds that. Couple that with our brain still developing & our lack of impulse control, and it is truly a time of our life that is a disaster waiting to happen. Thinking back on my teenage years, I'm somewhat surprised that there actually aren't more suicides at that age.

Some reasons of teen suicide are related to that they are more vulnerable and helpless, thus less able to get out of bad situations, less able to help themselves. More financially dependent, being physically weaker, tied to a specific house, education place, parents whom they can't choose, generally having a less well-established life, etc.. Impulsivity, "hormones", and social media influence are probably exxagerated somewhat. And it isn't much higher among teens than among others.

I am 43, i cannot socialise, I cannot get a partner and I am stuck in an empty marriage since 13 years. I would like my life to be perfect as it was 2 years ago and I do not have the energy to start over again. Do not blame teens for those reason. It is easy to say that it will change when most probably it won't.
