The government tries so desperately hard to keep people alive that at this point i feel like the only choice is to jump infront of a train which i would never want to do, they lock down SN just to keep people in this miserable grey country and for what? all its done is increase train suicides and ruined train drivers lives, whats the reason? i highly doubt they care about the life of a few people, i doubt its for moral highground or to say theyve saved lives considering they hardly publicly talk about this, and i doubt the financial gain from some minimum wage mcdonalds or store worker is probably mitigated from the effort they put into stopping it so why do they even do it? maybe they just get off to ruining train drivers lives or something

Because parents vote... Do you think parents would mind if their 15 year old could still get hold of SN on Amazon? Would your parents be ok with you buying it? There's huge pressure from the majority of society to stop their loved ones killing themselves. Especially the young. People go crazy over young deaths. The first thing they'll say is: 'How could this have been allowed to happen? Why wasn't this prevented?' I think it's a fallacy to believe it's only the government restricting access to methods. It's in fact the majority of society I would say.

In short, you're needed for the economy. The economy and people are necessary for WW3, which'll happen sooner or later. They aren't interested in your well-being; they're expecting you to adapt somehow to the system they're throwing you in. Even if you're sick, they expect to drain every penny from you first, and only then might you die. That's why there's no easy way out.

Man, society is so fucked up in that respect. People are perfectly ok pushing others to suicide by making them jobless, homeless, restricting access to health care, destroying public services, bullying and/or ostracizing them for being gay, trans or generally different. But god forbid someone wants to safely and peacefully leave this life, that's a step too far!

As for the government - they just need slaves to the system to keep them in power, to fight their wars, commit their genocides and keep making the rich even richer.

That would hand over control to the individual. Not everyone sees it as a good thing. And if a govt allows this, it's a slippery slope after that.

Yes. I may sound anti-choice by posting this and I apologize, but I believe there is a risk of making it too easy to get rid of undesirables by incentivizing suicide. Especially in recent years where the political climate drifts further to the right I see it as dangerous.

Only the individual brain that is suffering knows how bad it is and it should be up to that individual when to leave this hell prison. Plus we all will die anyway, pain is much worse than people realize

For example governments don't allow even people 80 years old with horrible disabling painful disease like dementia, arthritis, ms , to hire somebody to help with suicide or purchase a suicide booth, suicide kits , nembutal etc. Only in very few countries only if a "god" doctor approves and says ur terminal ( 6 months to live) will they maybe approve after an application process. That's madness and imo makes us all slaves . To even begin to accept this injustice most would have to believe many lies like that we are immortal, that old age is a picnic, that extreme pain is not that bad , that something extremely horrible cant happen to anyone. We all will die anyway and soon how fast did the last 5 years pass. So does it make sense to deny someone age 80 in unbearable pain who is begging to die relief by for example using a sarco suicide booth or hiring someone to kill them? Hell no. Im talking the stupid evil government our masters allowing any over 60 this. They will never. Wtf we all will die . Pain is a billion times worse than u can imagine

Western democracies were built as an alternative to monarchies where the system was for the Royals, by the peasants.

Democracy was intended to be for the people, by the people.

I guess the reason governments prevent suicides is because the average person is against suicide, and the government is serving the needs of the average person.

A more pessimistic answer is that the system we're a part of needs needs people to fuel it. A kind of modern slavery. The government is part of that system.

I understand, it's just so dreadful and terrible how the suffering and torture of human existence is seen as to force and prolong no matter what with no acceptance towards the right to die as all I want is to never suffer ever again.

All I wish for is a painless guaranteed death to escape from this existence I always saw as such a terrible mistake and there's just so much pain and so much suffering in existing, I find it horrific how trying to die can go wrong and lead to way worse suffering in this torturous, dreadful existence where there is no limit as to how much agony one can feel, I'll always find it so deeply undesirable to exist and I just always suffer so much from how I cannot just have a death like falling into an eternal dreamless sleep.

There are a lot of misanthropic responses in this thread which is entirely fair, but I have a slightly different view. I believe the efforts of governments to "help" suicidal people stems from a general biological fear of death. The people who comprise governments and make laws are all mentally healthy (I'm using this term comparatively) and need to believe that if they were ever suicidal themselves, in theory, that there would be systems in place to protect them from death. Making suicide easy to achieve or even publicly facilitated brings death closer to people generally.

Healthy people who cling to life do not want to be reminded of their own mortality. They want to live unburdened and be confronted with death only in some distant, imagined future. Life is of utmost importance to them. Governments can suffer the deaths of foetuses, of foreigners, of those estranged from themselves; however, as soon as middle-aged, middle-class, white men start killing themselves, that hits too close to home. Of course I'm generalising here but I hope you can be lenient enough to understand my point.

They need people to pay taxes. They need people to work and pay taxes. Even if you don't work and you're living off someone else's money, or on the government's dime, you still consume products/services and pay sales tax. The companies that benefit from you buying their products pay tax.

This is true, and while most people in society (IRL) don't openly admit it, it's likely there are people who subconsciously recognize this.
