French as a mother tongue, I'm rather confident about that, and supposedly i'm as good enough at english as a non-native can be(as long as I don't have to speak it).

Good for you, Pupuce!
English is my native language, and I'm pretty good in Spanish, German a distant 3rd. And, from high school, I remember a teensy bit of Japanese, and enough Mandarin to take taxis, order food go shopping and give direction at beauty salons.

Foreign language used to be my LIFE. I loved learning new languages & I thought mastery of a foreign language would be the most valuable/lucrative skill in the world. Then, I realized language alone-- unless it's like Pashto or Kazakh or Korean these days --- really won't get anyone anywhere.

Thank you for starting this thread. I've been trying not to be so bitter, and I've been listening to the "slow" news reports on Deutsche Welle, so as to begrudgingly keep up my skillz.

Native English speaker, and I read and speak Italian more or less fluently but don't write it as well as I'd like to. I understand western Friulian pretty well and can say at least a few phrases here and there (my mom's family is from Friuli in Italy). Our Friulian dialect is fairly different from the standard (Udine) Friulian that's in the dictionaries and grammars though, so I can't really study to improve it :/

Aside from that I know a bit of French, it was always my best subject in school but I never have a chance to practice it, so I've lost most of it. And I have a little bit of Latin, unfortunately I can't find the motivation to keep studying though.

Native English and limited Japanese. I majored in it college, intending to become an interpreter, but I had to quit halfway. It's been so long, I've forgotten a lot of it. I do still remember a surprising amount, though. Now I read Japanese much better than I speak.
