Thus far only on episode was aired. I am like a really huge Ghost in the Shell fan. I am not sure either Death Note or Ghost in the Shell is my favorite anime franchise.
I am never hyped about a new anime TV series usually. I am usually always too late when it comes to trends. I am the last one who watches such shows usually. I really like Fullmetal Alchemist (Brotherhood): I introduced the series and many others to my friends when I was younger. A friend told me to read Daemons of the Shadow Realm. I bought me one volume but never read it. Then there was a stream of the series even on German (I prefer German dub a lot). Now I watch it and the series is damn good. It is really a refreshing approach to anime. It is something new, creative and original. The setting is pretty pretty amazing and innovative. Thus far it doesn't come close to Fullmetal Alchemist. But I only watched a few episodes.
I am hyped since months about the the new The Ghost in the Shell(2026) series. Last year when I went through a lot. I started to re-watch Gits SAC. And I love this series so much. I watched the films and Arise afterwards. There is one film with a really bad German dub with a cheap cast. And it makes one movies so much worse in my ranking. I read all the articles and I read speculations from fans. And many were concerned it is aired on Amazon Prime. Usually this means a really poor dub. I assumed for a long time I had to watch it with subs or on English. I underestimated how popular the franchise was. There is a German dub even with the original cast. It sounds really good. But maybe I am a noob. I am not a huge anime fan anymore. I watched the episode very closely. It is very dense, colorful and high paced. I had to rewind some scenes. I will probably watch the episode again. I looked at the manga. Read parts of it. And I was aware the anime is quite different to the manga. The new 2026 series is closer the manga. A lot closer to the the series imagined by Masamune Shirow. It is also interesting the different interpretations of Gits by different producers.
I like the philosophical questions with Gits. I have to say in many instances I am quite impressed by the new series. They did a good job. For me it is very important that it is very close to the manga because this is what the anime franchise of Gits is missing. I find it interesting when Motoko isn't all the serious anymore. I alslo like her personality to be more cheeky. For me this makes the protagonists even deeper because they have so many facets.
I have now a really weird criticism. But this is something that bothers me. The approach to nudity in the 2026 series. Gits is always about the interplay of biology and new technologies. And in most interpretations of the series there is a lot of nudity. Not always as fanservice even though there is a lot of fanservice in the manga. But I have the feeling the Gits 2026 censors a lot of aspects of the managa on this issue. And one reason is probably the marketing and the question whether it fits to the mainstream target group. Anime was for teenagers/kids. I don't want hardcore pornography as in the manga. The next episode will be about the junk jungle. And I think the scene most fans are aware of will be either extremely censored or just cut out. I really dislike the approach there is some fanservice e.g. Motoko is embarrassed about some things. But I had to re-watch the scene a couple of times because I didn't get why she was actually embarrassed. There are some allusions but they are pretty hard to understand. One could see into her consciousness and I think in the manga there were sex scenes or something like that and in the 2026 there was showns like some bodies and you really have to be into the universe to understand what they wanted to hint to. I find this incredibly annoying and ridiculous. It gives me the feeling that the target group is way younger than actually conceptualized. Maybe I am a little bit too critical. Usually I am not a huge fan of fanservice. But if you adapt the original manga it feels distorted to cut all these scenes out.
On most other aspects I am very satisfied thus far. There is more light humor. People who only the SAC approach or the films might be confused about that. But actually it is part of the series and for me it contributes to the complexity of it.
