If you see someone in public who catches your interest, approaching them rarely works. Society feels like a tease.

I made friends in community college each semester and then lost them when the semester ended. I tried to keep it going but people are busy, have their own friends from way back, etc.

I'll often hang out in my car at the local shopping center and I see others of all ages doing the same from time to time. By themselves and looking bored. Some look around expectantly. So sad

College isn't even a good place to meet people unless maybe if it's a university with dorms. Coworkers aren't ever really friends but acquaintances. Modern society is empty.

I had made friends with some coworkers, but only those that were interesting or similar enough to me to want to hang out outside of work. We still hung out after working at that place, so it's not impossible just probably not typical.

It's comforting to know that countless people in my gen and below are feeling this alienation as well.

I don't have any friends.

Maybe try to rely on extended family members? They're often more dependable.

They live far away and we're not close. How do you cope with being alone?

It's better this way, too many risks if otherwise.

I think the 'friends from way back' is the key - the original tribe you bonded with when you were young and carefree, just feels easier and more natural to be around - it's much harder to make friends as an adult. Some people make life-long friends at uni though, which is when they're in adulthood, and I'm sure older people manage it too - it's just harder

Some people will chat to anyone. But most people will need a common Interest to have a conversation. And probably some beer or wine to allow those first conversations to flow freely. Depends how much they chatted at home. Joining a club with something you are interested in like films or a game might help. Or an Interest.
