when you ignore it some people will stop, but many will just hurt someone else or escalate into harming you in a way that you cant just ignore

As an absolute rule, it does not always work.
Negative people will exploit this leniency (e.g., start hitting you) because they know they cannot be punished.
The advice overall sounds too overly righteous. Not blaming the guy - you have to maintain the mask to succeed irl
