I was sleeping comfortably when 2 police officers arrived at my door- border control had detained my SN for a short period of time and informed them to conduct a welfare check on me.

I have since been placed under involuntary inpatient for a period of at least 5 days. despite saying i had no plans to use it soon. be careful ordering SN from international sources, Australians... it seems the border force know what to look for.

TIG. I recommend people in Australia avoid this source but perhaps even all SN sources in general.

it took a while for them to actually check on me though. I had the SN for a couple of weeks.

Living in Australia is getting me frustrated for this very reason. Even before the IC/CSS crackdown, it was a wild goose chase and now we're the ones being chased down if we dare attempt to obtain a more peaceful death.

liability, liability, liability. that's all it is. it doesn't have anything to do with improving my mental health. just preventing me from CTBing for a few days, which I wasn't planning to anyway...

Holy shit 🫂 that happened to me as well. The only difference was they seized it before the sn made it to my house. I hope the psych ward isn't too bad, your stay should only be short. I got out earlier than expected. I'm sending you a virtual hug and I hope you get out soon. Or, if they're offering help, I hope there is something useful out of your admission.

yes I saw your thread! I got so paranoid after that but thankfully my SN arrived and wasn't seized from me, even after the welfare check. maybe they thought it didn't arrive for some reason?

thank you for your kind words, I'm sorry we get treated like subhumans simply for wanting a peaceful exit.

Oh wow, that's super lucky. And yes it's fucked up we're treated like cattle. Honestly worse than some cattle. At least they have a shot at being free range.

yep, it's deranged. but i do consider myself lucky... the police were saying "they do good work down at the border force, right mate?"

not really xD I already have it. something must have gone wrong in their procedure

I wonder why you had the police show up and I had the paramedics 🤔 Is it just a crapshoot?

Oh damn!!!! Here is advice for everyone who orders through the post......get the supplies OUT OF THE HOUSE. Stick em in a safety box, or with a mate. Involuntary observation at the mental is alarming & bad for you. Hope you came through with goods intact. You can lie to cops you know....no warrant means no entrance.

I've had welfare checks done by paramedics and police before- sometimes at the same time. no idea how they make the call but my guess would be unit availability and maybe a history of violence of the patient.

not really an option for me. they knew everything about my order, and even though they had no warrant and SN is not an illegal substance to own I live with my mum. she would have let them in and been extremely distraught had I completely refused.

I have no words. If this was in the US you'd come out of your stay with a bill in the tens of thousands of dollars. Hopefully at least that isn't the case in Oz.

That is just so horrible and inhumane, it disgusts me how other people try to force those who want to leave to suffer until they die anyway, I hate how there is a lack of acceptance towards the right to die.

the police making this comment is so vile. I'm so sorry they treated you this way and hope you are able to get discharged asap. In the US, patients have a right to challenge an extended psych hospitalization by writing a letter to mental health court, which has to be followed up on within 72 hours. This info is NOT widely known by patients, but it can often be successful.

Idk if there is anything like a 72-letter policy in Australia. If there is a patient advocate working in the hospital (another source of help in the US that is often unknown to patients), you can ask to meet with them and have them help you with options for discharge that the psych unit staff is never going to voluntarily share with patients. Best of luck getting out.

christ.. the crackdown really caused international uproar, this is fucking bad...
Also involuntary commitment should be a fucking crime. Its torture, kidnapping and slavery all in one

in the US, yeah... I only see that contributing to suicidality. but here in Australia thankfully i don't have to worry about that.

it was vile, absolutely. thank you for the tip. I will ask the nurse the next time they check on me if such a thing exists.

This would never happen in the US, we have more rights here than Australia does--Apparently in Australia a wellness check infers incarceration, while in the US, the cops are just checking to see if you're ok and trust you to tell them the truth--The police here in Florida couldn't have been nicer, they were basically just trying to get some information

No, the US police are not heavy handed here like in Australia, we have more rights here than you do, there wouldn't be any involuntary hospitalization in the first place, but unfortunately Australia is different---I'm sorry to hear this

in my experience a wellness check usually means you're getting committed, yes. maybe I could have fought the police harder but the owner of the home (my mum) was there and would have let them in anyway.

only one wellness check I've ever had, conducted by paramedics, didn't result in commitment.

From my experience in the US, if it's just your regular, run-of-the-mill patrol police officers that come to do the welfare check, it's been easier to deal with them. This probably involves some degree of luck (I've been very fortunate in that regard so far, as they were all business and just wanted to get it over with). While I've not experienced it myself, from having observed others get a welfare check visit that involved medical/mental health personnel, chances of getting dragged to hospital seemed much higher.
