  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

This is a clear and unprecedented overreach by a foreign regulator against a U.S.-based platform. We reject this interference and will be defending the site’s existence and mission.

In addition to our public response, we are currently seeking legal representation to ensure the best possible defense in this matter. If you are a lawyer or know of one who may be able to assist, please contact us at [email protected].

An article in the world economic forum

Addresses ways that countries and local communities can address the rising suicide rate.

The suicide rate in the USA continues to increase rising by greater than a linear population growth since 2000 (well before sanctioned suicide was in place).

In the recent article there were no mentions of decreasing access to reddit forums or discussions of sanctioned suicide as leading indicators of this growth.

From the article:

Suicide was declared a public-health crisis in the US as long ago as 1999 by the Surgeon General. Many factors are involved, including human experiences of isolation, struggle, loss and unmet expectations; low mental-health literacy; and a separate and unequal system of care with limited treatment access for those with mental health and substance use disorders.

5 ways communities can reduce suicides

• Host educational trainings such as Mental Health First Aid and Talk Saves Lives™ for frontline citizens and healthcare professionals.
• Invite local AFSP chapter to provide suicide prevention education and education on lethal means, especially among communities with higher gun ownership.
• Provide local media with guidance on safe reporting strategies, and hold them accountable for promoting messages of hope, help-seeking and resilience.
• Integrate mental health care and suicide prevention practices into primary care, and bring Safety Planning and SafeSide Primary Care Training to local health systems.

What is not a.glaring recommendation by this panel.of.expetts is "take away suicide discussion forums where individuals suffering from debilitating depression can have open dialogue about their emotions without fear of being banned for hitting "triggers" and being told to "call the hotline"

I was hoping that that they would recognise a correlation between suicide and substandard quality of life, hence the ultimate solution is to generally improve the lot of the underclasses by containing the runaway wealth disparity that is plaguing our economy systems, support for those with health woes or historical abuse trauma, and make the future outlook less grim by repairing the ecosystem.

The so called suicide "experts" are often wrong and I think they intentionally push certain narratives so they can wash their hands of responsibility by pretending that their methods are actually helpful.

Reporting people doesn't prevent suicide, it momentarily delays it using force and prolongs a miserable existence. People who end up in the "loony bin" usually just lie to the best of their ability until they get released back outside with the same exact problems that brought them there in the first place; no shit they're going to attempt again.

I agree with @Pluto that the most effective way to genuinely prevent suicide are things like money, housing, and healthcare. I don't ever see that happening though because I don't actually believe that our society cares about the disadvantaged.

I think there are probably very strong correlations between lower socioeconomic class and increased depression, lack of access to healthcare and increased stress and anxiety. I'll see what I can find on those topics.
I have actually found a lot of very confusing data on the relationship between socioeconomic conditions and suicide risk. So many different studies with so many different conclusions

One discussed data that shows making 10-15 percent less than your neighbors dramatically increases suicide risk, one discussed jobs or careers with no specific work end (no shift) as increasing the risk, one pointed out that depression increases below 35k (usd) in income and one in Germany pointed out that they could not find a correlation between suicide rates and access to mental health.

While this set of a cursory examination is not a conclusion, at rough glance it appears that depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation are more like cancer in that they don't discriminate along status.

Let me look deeper.

One problem here could be the tendency for less affluent people to be less educated, and more likely to be a part of religious groups which strictly prohibit suicidal contemplation by threatening hell in the afterlife. This is a trend that would particularly hold in so-called 3rd world societies. Hence there are cultural factors that would obfuscate an otherwise simple correlation approximately equating socioeconomic status and suicide.

That's true too! So many ways to have to characterize the populations.

Just like how there are talks in school about drugs and sex, I think there needs to be one about mental health too.
I also think that police shouldn't be the ones to do welfare checks

I think they needs to be done my psychiatric professionals with emt training.

Suicide hotlines should be run by people who have actually studied psychology in school
Maybe before we become adults, tell us what to expect, how to choose a college and how to deal with adversity and problems that arise. They expect parents to teach this shit but there are too many trash parents out there

What does that mean?
