Honestly, if you live in a country that has such censorship, Tor Browser might actually be more secure in some ways. VPNs only mask your IP address. Here are some for the things that are still exposed:

• Operating system language settings.
• Keyboard layout & timezone.
• Plugins installed.
• Hardware specifications.

Tor Browser by default uses it own unique settings making it harder to track the individual. Now of course, nothing is foolproof. I'm sure they could find an exploit if they really thought you did something so terrible, but I don't think that'll be an issue for most people here.

Though, I guess Tor Browser or VPN are both good options for most people.

This really depends on the threat model of each individual user. Law enforcement understands that technical exploits in the Tor network are extremely valuable because each one is hard to come by. They're not going to use these exploits on just anyone.

For example, in the United States back in 2015, the FBI did a massive investigation into a dark web child pornography site. They seized the site and arrested a lot of people. When the court case finally came around, the FBI was asked to provide evidence of how they were caught, meaning the FBI had to explain how the exploit worked. The FBI refused and the case was dismissed.

If it says you're connected, you should be fine. All of your internet traffic from that device will now be routed through the VPN servers.

If you are referring to Netgear Armor, I wouldn't trust a company that puts backdoors in its routers, nor would I trust a company that sells snake oil and works with Europol/FBI.

If you want a reputable VPN, choose one of those mentioned in the original post. The "drawback" with all VPNs and Tor can be that certain sites like Google or reddit block you. Sometimes switching servers helps, or using alternatives to the sites in question, if available.

Use proton. You can use it for free, or you can subscribe and get a better service. It's based in Switzerland, and it is very secure. They don't keep logs. Their software was written by scientists who used to work at CERN (the big particle accelerator on the Swiss/French border), i.e. by very smart people, so it should be free of bugs (and backdoors). You can also use Tor via proton.

You are not breaking the law. But by making it easier for the authorities to figure out who you are, you are increasing the chance that you will have problems if you do try to ctb. They can't throw you into a psych ward if they don't know who you are.
