Kurt Cobain wrote that in his suicide note. I never really understood it.

"I have it good, very good, and I'm grateful, but since the age of seven, I've become hateful towards all humans in general. Only because it seems so easy for people to get along and have empathy. Only because I love and feel sorry for people too much I guess."

It is quite contradicting. Isn't it?

The only feeling I know is becoming resentful. And I think many people who were hurt by other humans become kind of a misanthrope.

I just simply don't really understand his feelings. Can someone explain it to me?

My totally uneducated guess after reading the entire thing would be that he was depressed and not being able to appreciate the good things filled him with guilt, and for the empathy and love line I would imagine that he means we humans have the capacity for love and empathy yet we chose not to do better, we choose to make a world where we hurt and judge and trample others despite all our potential for goodness and recognizing that can fill you with hate.

There's this quote that goes around "Inside every cynical person there is a disappointed idealist."

I suspect, when people become really depressed, they have confusing and contradictory ideas about life. Right now I am in a state of depression that makes it hard to even walk down the stairs. Earlier on I was in tears reading about how Kelsey Grammer lost his sister to rape and murder in 1975, but then I struggle with feelings of meaninglessness in life, a lack of empathy towards others, sometimes valuing women by only how physically beautiful they are - all of these things contradict each other tremendously. If life is meaningless, then what does it matter if Kelsey lost his sister, and if I at least sometimes I only value women by how beautiful I think they are, why would I think his sister losing her life is such a tragedy, and if I struggle with empathy, why was I feeling so sorry for what Kelsey had to go through? Human's don't make sense, especially when depressed.

I think he saying that it is easy enough for human beings to love each other but they don't and so he's hateful towards the human species for being that way.

Not sure either. Suppose if you felt sorry for and love towards the people of the world who were suffering (which I guess is empathy), you would feel anger towards those who were making them suffer.

Not sure why it's an early feeling of hate towards all humans but to say 'humans in general' maybe he means our overall slant towards being exploitative and cruel- when we would be better if we all empathised with one another.

If that's what he meant, I disagree with him. I think that it's often very hard for humans to love each other. We often disagree viscerally about very personal things. Like with suicide, some people think it's a human right and others think it should be forbidden.

Yeah I never understand it when people claim to hate all humans because of the ones who treat other humans terribly either. In my opinion you can't call yourself a misanthrope if you cringe at the sight of people suffering for any reason. True hatred means deriving joy from the targeted group feeling pain for any reason regardless of how innocent or undeserving of a victim they are. True hatred for humans should mean being happy to see so many of them going through pain and wanting nothing to do with them and not caring that they're brutalizing each other.

Perhaps just a case of awkward wording. Maybe he meant that it seems easy for people to get along and have empathy but they often don't. That's why he's resentful. But this whole sentence just seems really odd and I always found him as a person and his lyrics kinda odd and difficult to understand. I know poetry can be like that but I just don't get him. But I never delve deep into his persona and music. On the other hand, I like Jim Morrison a lot as an artist and find his lyrics very poetic, as somebody in the same realm.

I don't understand either but I'll validate his decision to end his life; Absurdly, because he didn't ask for my validation haha.
He made up his mind, that's all and I respect that.

I think I get it. I've always had very intense feelings, lots of empathy (I think) and other people just say "bad things happen, to suffer is to be human" and I'm screaming "but suffering is horrific!" and getting too emotional (if that's bad) over everything. I sometimes hate the human race but I don't want any individual people to suffer and I'm way more affected by it than other people it seems.
