It should work in theory...However, you need to make sure u're not found, it's *really* painful, and even if you aren't found, you still might survive. If you survive you will live with no tongue or whatever bit of tongue that remains, which will be a problem more or less. So, conclusion, not recommended, there's a bunch of good methods with detailed documentation here. (ex. SN and hanging)

I think it's virtually impossible to swallow your tongue but there is the concern while someone is unconscious that the tongue can move back to block the airway- I think that's one reason people are moved into the recovery position- on their side. Not so sure it's something you could do consciously though. Seems along the same lines as trying to just stop breathing.
