As you know, censorship around the world has been ramping up at an alarming pace. The UK and OFCOM has singled out this community and have been focusing its censorship efforts here. It takes a good amount of resources to maintain the infrastructure for our community and to resist this censorship. We would appreciate any and all donations.
I did a quick 20-second Google search so take what I say with a grain of salt, but some of the state regulation has age verification and parental consent among other things. The age restrictions of the past were simply just "Are you 13? Press yes." or you'd enter in a fake date of birth. The media sites didn't care about their own self-regulation. The government in some states is now a bit stricter about it. I do not live in a state that has such restrictions so I do not know how it is in practice. Nor am I a minor so I won't have to deal with it.
Some states are floating the idea of restricting access to social media for those <16. I haven't looked into it enough to know what restrict means, but it almost certainly just means they won't be able to make accounts and post content on those platforms, but will still be able to view the content. Ie: Watch YouTube videos, but not be able to make a YouTube account.
I guess it's a matter of if you want China to surveil you, or your own country. In the end, I am completely apathetic to it.
But how do they want to enforce it? A law that can't be enforced doesn't exist in practice.
One potential way could be to send scans of your ID, but that raises more issues related to privacy and anonymity.
This is a difficult topic that I don't know the answer to, because on the one hand I'm a big supporter of anonymity and privacy, but on the other hand I'm aware that it's hard to fight some things without limiting privacy and anonymity.
My biggest problem is that I have absolutely no trust in corporations and politicians on either side. The past and present show that they are hungry for our data, among other things.

The supermajority of people would not want to have to deal with scanning their IDs or giving a company their social security number or whatever other information to multiple sites that have cyber attacks going 24/7. Even if you don't care about cybersecurity it's annoying to have to do. I don't know how they're going to enforce it, but we'll see how they'll do so in the next couple of years.

Yes, that's why this idea of sending a scan of an ID card is very questionable, especially since companies regularly show that they are not competent in securing data.
I think that at the moment it is just a game of appearances and politicians are just pretending to do something.
Or maybe it is a slow boiling of a frog and in the long term they plan to further limit privacy and anonymity and the Internet on an ID card will be something normal... it is not a pleasant prospect.
Same! I think some people with disability getting income posting on TT from their own home/bed…. I'm not going to lie! I have 20k followers I was upset when it was banned…
