From what I learned from source megathread, it would be better if it's not too thin (like fishing wire)
something about as thick as necktie would be perfect, says the thread

I will use a thin rope for compress the carotid artery. I'm a female 45 kg 152cm so I think it depends of your weight and if you will do partial hanging or full hanging.

Definitely not wire. Quite a thick rope is good, like 8-12mm
