I've thought about how I'd like to CTB and it's always come back to death by charcoal (carbon monoxide poisoning) because it seems like the most peaceful/less messy way to go.

I wouldn't mind trying SN though but, fuck, trying to locate the pure stuff here in Canada has proven to be harder than finding a clear image of Bigfoot.

I live within a 10-minute walk to a huge forest, most of which is pretty thick with cedar/maple/oak trees and, therefore, not visited much by people. It would be a very, very good place to have tons of privacy and not even be found for a long time as well. Getting the charcoal is easy, getting the rest of the gear necessary is also easy. Having the proper time, privacy and space is also extremely easy and secure too.

I know that carbon monoxide is the most potent when the charcoal is grey and burning off (ashy) and since I will be either using a tent or a makeshift huge, sealed tarp (overtop of me but sealed up at the ends and side with the charcoal in the middle, in a fire pit dug into the earth), I wanted to know if this would be enough to produce enough carbon monoxide to do the trick?

I have a huge bag of charcoal too, so quantity isn't the issue at this point. If I managed to seal up the tarp, do you think this would work? I really don't want to go out and purchase a tent for this and, quite frankly, I'd prefer to be on the actual bare earth so that whomever finds my body weeks/months after I do it, it's not stuck into the fabric of a sealed tent.

I suppose I should get a CO2 detector too, just to maybe do a test run first, they aren't very expensive at all on Amazon.

I've read lots of stories about people dying in tents from CO2 but I haven't read much about doing it purposely under a tarp... you think it's possible?

Aiming for sometime in December before it gets too cold out too, well, too cold as in -20 out where I live.

You should read the carbon dioxide megathread in order to understand this method- it needs to be done carefully and correctly to work. There are a lot of details, but one of the big ones is that the charcoal has to stop smoking before it is brought indoors.

I did read the megathread for sure, thank you for pointing it out though (I'm not being sarcastic when I say this either), it really did help out a lot to understand it.

Since this forest is really private, I plan on setting everything up first, sealing up the tarp with stakes and then wood on all the ends and burning the charcoal outside of it, then transferring it into a fire pit that I've dug into the ground. Once I do that, I can just seal up the remaining end and, hopefully, drift off in peace.

I think the tarp should be sealed enough to trap in the CO2, especially if there's enough charcoal being used. The area will be smaller than a bathroom, so as long as I can make the tarp sealed to the ground, I think it could work.

Iyt sound slike it could work- if I had a good location for this I would choose it over sn, done right it seems more reliable and more peaceful than sn. The party about your post that concerned me was: "I know that carbon monoxide is the most potent when the charcoal is grey and burning off (ashy)" - if it is smoking when it is brought indoors this will cause the method to fail- people become overwhelmed by the smoke and leave. It is plenty potent enough after it stops smoking.

True, you're right, the smoke will def leave someone with burning eyes, coughing and probably force them to leave the area due to the conditions.

Maybe I'll do a test first with a CO2 meter, that way, I'll see how potent it'll get without actually being inside for the whole test.

If doing it in the bush. Use a tent which has a high floor to prevent the CO from leaking out of the tent. CO will sink in the tent when you bring the coals inside.
You will have to first burn the charcoal until they are covered in white ash and have stopped smoking and place it in the tent. Make sure to have something on the floor so it does not melt the tent. Close the tent and CO will start to build up. So lay down and try go to sleep and you should hopefully die from CO.
