  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

Do you secretly rejoice when the carefree people to whom nothing bad ever seems to happen get taken down a peg? Or when the championship home team that "everyone" (except you) loves loses a game? I think you get my drift. Well, I do. Which is weird, because I otherwise regard myself as a very compassionate and empathetic person. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that I regard life as a kind of hell on earth, and that suffering should be distributed more "democratically". I can't emphasize enough that I would never actively do anything to increase the sum of suffering in the least degree.

Is the carefree person a nice person? Then no, I don't tend to think like that.

If the carefree person is an ass? Maximum schadenfreude

I agree with your first two sentences. I should have made that qualification.

I do exactly this...I feel a lot of envy for successful people, although I don't really wish to see them fail unless I find a reason to dislike them. But yes, when those people get hit by misfortune for once, it is refreshing, even though I know that is mean. It makes me think: perhaps now they will be moved a step closer to understanding the hatred for existence that I have.

Yes, I can absolutely relate.

It's why I usually come to like the villains, antagonists, or anti-heroes in a story more than the heroes. Heroes in stories may sometimes have tragic backstories, but usually they will have everything handed to them, they will have some kind of loving support network full of people who don't want them to fail, they uphold the status quo and the conventional way of life,, even the narrative of the very universe conforms to their will. With those on the darker side of things, they are usually doomed to failure from the start, they will always lose, rarely did they receive much warmth or loving, and if they did it was snatched away. Or an another way of looking at things, simply going against the grain of mainstream and polite society and trying to cause anarchy or destruction is enough to endear them to me.

I'm extremely contrarian. If I feel like something or someone gets more praise or adoration than it deserves, I start to hate it. Conversely, if I feel like something gets more hate or vitriol than it deserves, I start to gain empathy toward it and look at things from that perspective. I can very easily look at things from other perspectives, almost too easily, and so I'll sometimes play the role of "devil's advocate." If there is something that "everyone" loves or agrees with, I will be one of the first to question that wisdom. The common and acceptable way of doing things is rarely the best one.

I can relate more to the misunderstood, those who are outsiders and outcasted from society, so that is where my mentality comes from.

I do hate how "unbalanced" life is, so I absolutely understand what you mean when you say you feel like things should be distributed democratically.

This has always made much more sense than mainstream religious worldviews. The Old Testament gives a lot of clues as well.

I think this disposition has to be relatively common among those that, frankly speaking, hate life, or society. I often ponder about how monstrous my schadenfreude psyche is, and have witnessed that people do get startled when they realize I am not joking with my outrageous takes on current events. It's sad to be this way, so hateful and bitter, but I am, and having to hide it from the complacent makes you a teenie weenie more hateful lol

It SEEMS to be caused by being opposed to how society is run or what the zeitgeist is, but it might be something deeper, meaning that in a different society we could be a contrarian all the same As a kid I already sided with the villains. The schizotypal explanation is that some are not "of this world", the materialist will say we just became aware at a young age of our rarity and dysfunction.

To me this is related with strange perceptions that most seem to never experience, like becoming aware that animals are tortured and killed every day for me to eat or use cosmetics, and feeling something negative about it, even though I failed vegetarianism. It seems correlated because the most staunch pro-lifers are often quite callous when it comes to things like that. Life is cruel and so are its children.

schadenfreude I think is only normal and healthy when you have it for people who are evil or for people who just don't listen , AKA "I told you so!"

I think I told you so schadenfreude is one of the best human emotions someone can have

If you have that for just anyone in life it's not healthy
And you need to get it fixed

I think the majority of people are evil and/or "just don't listen". And I never claimed to be healthy or wish to be "fixed" in this department.
