An air embolism is characterised by the blockage of blood vessels ceasing blood circulation.
I did some reading into intentional air embolisms. One lad used a diabetic cannula attached to the end of a bike pump and injected at least 50ml (as discovered through an aspirometer postmortem) through the veins on the back of his hand.
> As a large quantity of air enters into the venous system, it enters into the right ventricle and finally reaches the pulmonary circulation. As the pulmonary arterial pressure increases, it puts strain on the right ventricle, decreases the right ventricle outflow and the pulmonary venous return, which results in a diminished cardiac output and a cardiovascular collapse. If the volume of air is large enough (above 5mL/kg, it completely blocks the outflow from the right ventricle which immediately results in right-sided heart failure and immediate cardiovascular collapse. ... The lethal volume of air in humans is estimated to range from 200 to 300 mL
Another report detailed someone injecting 2000ml of air. He used a plastic bottle and infusion tubing. In his suicide note he described how he suspected he would suffer a "myocardial infarction with cramps" and "brain haemorrhage due to the elevated blood pressure".
Super rare in medical literature because there are easier ways to go about taking your life. Is there someone here who is knowledgeable on this sort of thing who can explain whether or not this process would be painful?
