No, it's not really possible because as you said the survival instinct always takes over. Even with the addition of alcohol or sedatives, the panic and adrenalin released once your survival instinct kicks is in most likely going to overcome everything else you take to calm down. I suppose the only way you could use suffocation was if you took steps to restrain yourself to prevent you from removing the bag once survival instinct kicked in. However, this would be extremely distressing to go through and the complete opposite of peaceful, and I do not recommend it!

Perhaps take some more time to look through the Resource Compilation section to find a method that is more suited to you? Note that an Exit Bag can be used in conjunction with certain inert gases.

I've tried numerous times to starve myself of oxygen with a bag over my head. I wanted to prove the literature wrong that it would be overwhelmingly unbearable to keep it on. I did not succeed in that task

As everyone has indicated, once the CO2 level get high enough, your body reacts to survive. Survival instinct in this case causes you to go into panic mode. You will reach up and tear the bag off in order to breath, most likely you won't even be aware that you are doing it. Someone who really wanted to suffocate using a plastic bag would have to restrain their hands behind their back after tying the back around their head. While it is possible, one of the methods I looked at, it is not a pleasant method. I will also note that folks have CTB with a twist on this method, they placed a cloth soaked in solvent, usually ether, which caused them top pass out before running out of oxygen. None of this was very appealing to me.
