Hey everyone, can you please share your favorite quotes with me? The quotes that have stood out the most to you or helped you when researching during a mental slump. I need to get my collection up. No anti-s stuff. I have quite a few saved to my phone so I'll start.

"Tonight the thoughts were about how to end things, with a heavy emphasis on the how. The process of suicide isn't exactly easy. It takes preparation, scheduling, and a certain level-headedness to kill yourself. A person has to be ready for it. He has to make the necessary plans, take the necessary steps. And, most importantly, he has to not only feel like dying, but also like killing. And the two feelings couldn't be more different."

I guess this is the better time, if any, to admit that I bookmark a shit ton of the posts people make here. I guess I'm weird, but I find the people here to be just.. Phenomenal. It's a shame we want to die.

I don't have favourites because I consider all of them special. But this was the most recent one, and it really pulled at my heart strings:

"I have a long list of regrets. Most of them are about some specific events in my life. Like I should have proposed to a woman at the right time. I should not have fucked up my job. Life should be lived in the opposite direction. I feel like I was given the exam before the actually class.

Now I am too tired to start all over again. I lack the social skills to do it. The only thing I was ever good at was my job, and that is gone now.

I spend the nights crying in silence. I'm crying in silence while I write this message.

I really saw enough of this world."

I hope this doesn't come in bad taste.

I've read one where it says something like 'sleep is good, death is better, but of course the best thing is to be never born at all'. I always remember that one. It sums up how I feel about existence. I really wish that I never existed.

I recognised some of them. I am so happy they made a good impression in your life. Nothing of what I usually say or do seem to be useful to other people.

Yep that is a good one. All my day is a long wait for the moment I can finally go to bed, feel the last tear of the day on my face and then finally go to sleep. Death would be similar I think but indefinite. Indeed if I could change something I would prevent my birth.
"the trick is to keep moving forward; to let go of the fear and the regret that slow us down, and keep us from enjoying the journey that will be over too soon"
If only that was so easy to implement. Not sure if I agree on the "too soon" part

Its not about how hard you can hit. Its about how hard you can get hit and keep moving foward.

"There are three sides to every story: yours, mine, and the cold, hard truth."

I first read it by Roger Waters, but it's apparently been attributed elsewhere with some variations.

Not exactly relevant to CTB discussion, but it has served me well when examining people's recollection and analysis of events.

A couple of more from those more intellectual than I:

This quote is not exactly about death or dying, but i love it so much.

«Goodbye, my book! Like mortal eyes, imagined ones must close some day. Onegin from his knees will rise — but his creator strolls away. And yet the ear cannot right now part with the music and allow the tale to fade; the chords of fate itself continue to vibrate; and no obstruction for the sage exists where I have put The End: the shadows of my world extend beyond the skyline of the page, blue as tomorrow's morning haze — nor does this terminate the phrase»

honestly, anything from bojack horseman is quotable, but this line gets me every time. makes me remember all the good things in life and realise that the journey isn't all that bad, but still bad enough to catch the bus.

Hard to live, hard to die

I was looking for a Marcus Aurelius quotation (Meditations V. 29 for those interested), but in so doing found an even better pair by the Stoic Epictetus:

"Remember that the door is open. Don't be more cowardly than children, but just as they say, when the game is no longer fun for them, 'I won't play any more,' you too, when things seem that way to you, say, 'I won't play any more,' and leave; but if you remain, don't complain." (Discourses I.24.20)

"Has someone made smoke in the house? If it is moderate, I'll stay. If too much, I exit. For you must always remember and hold fast to this, that the door is open." (Discourses I.25.18)

So interesting that a significant subset of well-regarded Greek thinkers, who have inspired sooo much of modern western society, were pretty freaking indifferent about the morality of suicide. Guess someone missed that memo in the Enlightenment...

I'm also a great fan of the one that is my signature.

This is great. Thank you for all the replies. I've been taking screenshots to add to my collection. It's nice to have quotes that others (with the same mindset) deem valuable enough to remember and share. As opposed to just googling quotes and having to sift through all the anti-choice, s prevention "suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem" brainless nonsense.

Here's another one from my personal collection.

"People who say that suicide is selfish always reference the survivors. It's selfish to leave children, spouses and other family members behind, so they say. They're not thinking about the survivors, or so they would have us believe. What they don't know is that those very loved ones are the reason many people hang on for just one more day. They do think about the survivors, probably up until the very last moment in many cases. But the soul crushing depression that envelops them leaves them feeling like there is no alternative. Like the only way to get out is to opt out. And that is a devastating thought to endure."
