If our society let people who truly wanted to die just do it, society would be slightly less obnoxious. America: Land of the Free, Home of the Brave. Unless you want to kill yourself no no no. We don't even accept that people want to die who have diseases that will give them a painful horrible end anyway like Alzheimer's or cancers that will kill you in a few months. Even if your death is inevitable and your life will suck until then, they won't let you go the way that is most dignified for you and your family. Noooo, you have to suffer "naturally" until the end! I have worked as a CNA and had to comfort old people who screamed about how much they hated their life and wanted to die. How they did not want to be as old as they were if they were going to just suffer and be changed. It was horrifying for some of them.

If a person wants to die whether they have a condition or they just don't like life, we don't let them. If they fail at ending their life and end up a vegetable we punish them by making them stay that way and suck up healthcare and other social services for something they didn't want. Some people who want to commit suicide won't do it out of that fear they will end up in some devastated way with no way out. And that horrifies me. If someone tries to do it and fails but is just the way they are now, that's one thing. But to see a person disfigured or in a vegetative state or with severe brain damage? And we just go well life is so beautiful aren't you happy you failed? NO I AM NOT HAPPY. I AM BEING TORTURED. I am sorry but I think that shows how unsympathetic and controlling and obnoxious society is that it won't gift someone their own death that they want so badly. They proceed to pat themselves on the back for it too.

I believe that people get to choose if they want to live or die. And there are people who have attempted suicide and lived and decided they wanted to live. That is great for them either choice they take. But someone in a vegetative state I can assure you probably doesn't want to be that way. You are keeping them trapped in a shell that is their own body.

Brilliant post. People say you can't die because "Life is precious'. Well those people haven't suffered unbearable physical or mental pain. They'd soon change their tune if they suffered a debilitating disease. I want to die but am apprehensive about fucking it up again. All people who want to die deserve to with dignity. Not some horrific way which the chances of succeeding are slim.

Thank you. It was on my mind and bothering me. I could never be a cna again. It was very physically and mentally exhausting and made my sciatica pain go crazy I am also waaaaay too introverted for that much human contact so now I worked in a more isolated job. I watched a woman with Alzheimers slowly lose the ability to speak English and forgot she knew English because she was an immigrant when younger and English was her second language. She would just pee and poo on everything and she would fight you. Her daughter would talk about what her mom was like before the disease and how vastly different she was. She was kind and intelligent and she was slowly turning into a vegetable. Because we all know where Alzheimers leads. It physically eats your brain away until you are a husk. To see a person degrade like that is insane and society just lets it happen. I am not sure how allowing suicide for it would work because they can't make intellectual decisions like that at a certain point. But I can't imagine anyone would want to live like that if they could opt to get euthanized and sign some papers before it progressed too far. I know if I could I would write up a will or whatever document that is to get euthanasia if I got diagnosed with that and it was 100% confirmed I had that.

It is almost like people don't want to accept that life can be really horrible. People modify our lives all the time if we aren't happy. If you get a booboo you put a bandaid on it. But you can't just opt out and leave this planet. I don't get why people are so accepting of some really vile and strange human behaviors, but not suicide. It is so strange to me.

Exactly, life CAN be horrible...and people don't want others to kill themselves, because it puts that fact into the limelight.

I think the way Western doctors treat terminal illness says a lot about Western society's fear of death. In Western culture, death is seen as an unnatural thing to be avoided as long as possible. The reality is that death comes to all of us eventually, no matter how we choose to arrive there. But our culture is not mature enough to accept this simple truth. So we try to prolong life as long as possible, even when it results in extended suffering.

This is exactly how I feel. Instead of letting people go and giving them the option to plan it even, they just try to keep it going for as long as possible against the person's will. If someone wants to drain all their money on treatments, go for it. Your choice. But if there was ever a better example of keeping people's degraded bodies and minds going for as long as possible it would be the nursing home. Those places disturb me. I never want to end up there. I would rather die a quick death than fester there for what seems like eternity.

I actually had a nightmare once I was an old woman who was actually sound of mind and body but I got forced to go to a nursing home anyway. And I was crying as a cna was force feeding me dry scrambled eggs. In the dream I kept telling her I hated scrambled eggs and didn't want them but she kept pushing them and talking to me like I was a baby, as they do. That was the worst nightmare I ever had. If there was ever a place to lose all your dignity, it is a nursing home. No matter how nice they are or pretend to be and no matter how clean, the whole place is a recipe for suffering.

It's a business - billions of dollars spent on meds to keep terminally ill, old, sick people "alive". Experimental therapies, aggressive treatments, tubes in every hole... lots of profit to be made. As long as you're alive someone, somewhere is getting more money.
Disgusting system built by disgusting species.

If you live in America at least you have access to guns which is probably the easiest and most effective method there is, in Europe it can be pretty hard to get ahold of SN and antiemetics depending on the country you live. And one of my fears is that at some point in the future governments will start to regulate these kind of substances and people wont be able buy them anymore.

The fact that the Right to Die is considered controversial shows how cruel humanity is. If humans were more enlightened and"civilized" as they pretend to be, it would not be a question at all. There'd be a suicide booth on every street corner like Futurama. But human morality has always been a very low bar.

I think a right to die should be a basic human right. We never asked to exist in the first place so we have no obligations to stay alive. We need compassion and understanding in our society. This world can be very cruel and there is no limit as to how much we can suffer. Society places more emphasis on quantity of lives rather than quality, we are basically forced to live no matter what happens. An individual human should be able to decide if their life is worth living. We deserve a peaceful death to make up for all the cruelty this life has inflicted on us, it would make life more bearable just knowing there was a way out if things got too bad.

And one of my fears is that at some point in the future governments will start to regulate these kind of substances and people wont be able buy them anymore.
And in our country everyone is fighting over gun bans because of school shootings. I do fear they will limit guns one day. It is the best way if you can learn to use it but people here want to get rid of them. I am not confident enough to hang or jump or drown. I can't cut my own throat. I would have to be waaaaay off the deep end and put into a bad corner. I need something to push me to that sort of point of breaking. I am too used to my own misery to do it in those ways, too much pain, too much fear of failing. A gun is my way out if things get to the point where I am done.

I hope they don't regulate those substances like that for you. I think everything is a big setup. We are all worked to death too just to have a roof over our heads. Rent is a scam, mortgages are a scam. Rent always climbs. Our rent is climbing and this place isn't even worth living in. At least it used to be cheap so that justified the stay but now it doesn't matter. They want us to struggle every day to keep the home, the food, the access to medicine, the lights on. Because if a house was easily affordable (perhaps in some areas but not here), and all your needs were more affordable they couldn't wage slave you. I felt like I wanted to cry at work today because I have to push my tiny weak body to keep going just to lay in bed feeling numb. Why does everyone make life so hard? I mean life is pretty garbage but it would feel so much more doable if people didn't push everyone so hard. Why cant we all just chill? Why can't we all just live in a nice little spot and stare out the window?

The fact that people find solace in retiring when they are 20 years or less from death is bizarre to me. I don't want "peace" at 60. I want it NOW. And the worst part is people are EVERYWHERE. At least when the population was really small you could get away from people. I mean REALLY get away from it all. Not anymore. I feel like I can't escape people around me. Even if there are no people, remnants of their dorito bags greet me even on a trail. I guess time to go to Antarctica and get the ol' penguin suit out the back of the closet.
