Youth Poisoning Prevention Act (U.S. – 2025)

This federal bill (H.R. 1442) aims to ban the sale of consumer products containing 10% or more sodium nitrite by weight. It's designed to reduce access to high-purity sodium nitrite, which has been linked to intentional poisonings and suicides.

What it does:

• Makes it illegal to sell high-purity sodium nitrite (≥10%) to private individuals.
• Does not ban lower concentrations used in food (like curing salts, e.g., Prague Powder #1).

Current status (as of July 2025):

• Passed both the House and Senate
• Not yet signed into law — currently awaiting presidential approval
• If signed, it becomes enforceable 90 days later

Until it's enacted, it's not yet enforceable at the federal level, though some states (like Washington) already have similar restrictions in place.

As of July 16th, 2025, the bill was re-read in the Senate so it seems like it will move quickly to the president to sign and then become enforceable 90 days later. As I've read on many message boards, it seems to be extremely difficult to find a source within the US even right now - it sounds like this bill is going to make it almost impossible.


FYI - I have not yet located a source myself and do not have PM capabilities so unable to discuss privately.

The UK will soon follow with a law like this, as will most countries.
I guess one last option might still be to travel to a country that sells it freely (like e.europe or china currently perhaps) and buy in person, then have one last holiday/vacation there. Return ticket not required.

why don't we keep KN a secret instead of posting hundreds of threads per day on it like for SN which could alert these monsters to also ban KN ?

CO always looked good, but requires some knowledge to setup. Very peaceful way to die.

I wonder if this was really a big problem in teenagers or they just slapped a "youth" label on it to make it easier to pass.

Does not appear to have passed the senate yet. Still worrying but knowing how slow the U.S. government moves, probably got a while until this is signed.

There's also the chance that this just dies in the Senate due to other higher priority items. That happens pretty regularly.

Do you think you are likely to get a welfare check if you ordered KN from abroad into the UK? or would this just be the case with SN?

Ive seen that even if you order from within the UK, that this can trigger welfare checks for SN. Do you think its the same for KN currently?

It's possible that a lot of people think that they are doing the right thing, within their values and moral compass.

An animal can be euthanised at any age, yet a person has to suffer! Even if euthanasia / assisted suicide is possible for a person (and it isnt for many), they have to meet very specific criteria and its not a quick and easy process!

An animal has more rights than a person! A grown adult should be able to choose if they want to be in peace. It shouldn't be someone else's choice!

It's just wrong. So much about this life is just wrong!

This bill is the most evil thing i've ever seen. they named it youth protection but banned SN for everyone. so they lied especially the one who sponsored it. if it was about the youth they'd put an age restriction of 18 like they are everything else. this bill is to keep us in the prison as slaves and to take away our right to move away from extreme suffering.

Exactly. It's not even in a committee. Personally I don't see this going very far. There are literally hundreds of bills that go to the senate and die. I would encourage any Americans here to contact their senators and tell them not to support this bill.

Exactly. They're packaging it up to pull at the heart/ fear strings- protect your children- when it sounds more like a blanket ban. If it really were simply about protecting the youth, it could still be sold to adults providing they provided ID.

Interesting that, nearing the end, Kenneth Law was asking for ID before he sold SN. He clearly knew that it was selling to minors that would cause the most uproar. (Rightly so- I don't personally agree to providing easy access to methods to minors.) I do agree with some gate keeping. But, to try and pass an outright ban using 'save the children' as a slogan is sneaky and dishonest.

Sodium nitrite is a substance that is generally used to cure meat and can be used medically to reverse cyanide poisoning. Swallowing a spoonful of sodium nitrite dissolved in a cup of water is likely to lead to a rapid death, and it is approximately 100 times more lethal than other poisoning methods used with suicidal intent.
\1\ Sodium nitrite causes hypotension, or low blood pressure, and methemoglobinemia, which inhibits the ability of blood to carry oxygen.

Once banned, it might be easier to get.
Remember when they banned booze, pot, heroin, meth and cocaine/crack?
The best way to insure availability is to tell people they cannot have it.

This is an inherent ethical dilemma that I fear cannot be avoided

We discuss That Method because we want to give people the ability to make informed decisions about their own bodies, and to help them avoid the unnecessary suffering of more painful methods. However, every time we discuss it, we make it a bit more visible, thus increasing the likelihood of That Method becoming inaccessible, which in turn increases the likelihood of people resorting to methods that cause unnecessary suffering.

Yet, if we keep That Method a secret so as to avoid publicizing it, we're withholding information that could help people avoid unnecessary suffering.

It's no wonder why people like us don't like living in this world, when even such a well-intentioned effort comes with such troubling ethical conflicts. This is an unfair place.
