As much I despise life, I personally think afterlife is bound to occur given the possibly infinite nature of time/space. There is no reason to believe that something that happened once (our consciousness) can't happen again. All it takes is the initial condition to match. And it doesn't even have to be human consciousness. It can be of any animal, just with lower cognitive ability. Like how your 7 year old child self had different perception and thinking from mature you, but you were still you, so was your consciousness. I'd love to hear your opinion but please refrain from fantasy, religious and wishful thinking.

Oh no, not this again ._.

However, afterlife's not possible, considering the phylogenesis of our brain and how its structure evolved from the first single-celled organism.

https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg21128311.800-a-brief-history-of-the-brain/

All that awaits is nothingness, everything else is just personal wishful thinking and miscomprehension of how consciousness actually works (it's an epiphenomenon, not a phenomenon "per se").

I really enjoy how you seem to feel you're the final word on this topic. From where did you get such expertise?

It is impossible to know what and if there is an afterlife, so I really don't have any views on it.

I don't know either, I think the Bible says, you will be asleep until the coming of Christ, then everyone will be resurrected for judgement some will be sent to the kingdom of God, others will be thrown in the lake of fire (for ever and ever?), others will be in the new earth which where lambs will be able to hang out with lions, meaning it will be peaceful for 1000 years, then the serpent will be released again for a little while, then the new earth will be destroyed and all the righteous will be in the kingdom of God (heaven).

http://www.creation-science-prophecy.com/special1.htm

Do I beleive this? Sadly I don't know, but it doesn't make my life any easier.

...maybe if you read the link included in post you'd know why?

Also, it's not "me", it's science. As much as you don't expect your lungs to keep going on breathing after your death, your personality --which highly relies on a working neural network and cannot simply be floating in the air to function properly -- shuts down

The brain is simply not equipped to manage the 'afterlife', whatever you mean with this.
You'd also have to conceive a heaven for cats, bees, dogs and all other mammals, to make things fair, since they've got an encephalon as well. Whatever, people will keep believing what they want despite contrary evidence

Time and space isn't infinite though. It all started with the big bang and it's gonna end in the big freeze probably. Means, everything in the universe will cool down and every sun will turn out, until it's all cold, black and dark with no life anymore. The universe is nothing more than a sandbox. Whoever created this, didn't design it for eternity. And I doubt there is a creator, exactly for that reason. And I have no reason to assume that there would be an afterlife either.

Personally, I hope there is none. I want my existence to end forever when I ctb. I seek never ending darkness and nothingness, exactly the state I was in before I was born.

Well if something was created from nothing, then I don't see how something else wouldn't be created from (something like this) a supernova can potentially even create a new type molecule which can create a new form of life, so it is very possible space and time could be infinite.
It's just really difficult to fathom how anything could be created from nothing.
But I wonder the same thing about God, how did he create himself?
Some christians could argue that it's more probable that God created himself, since there is nothing more powerful than God, by definition.

This is one of the reasons I have anxiety.
The unknown.

I did read it. Maybe I missed something, but I'm not sure how it proves your position. And I'm not saying there is an afterlife one way or another. It's an incredibly personal belief. The fact that you used the word 'encephalon' instead of 'brain' (I had to look up the definition on google) says a lot. And I don't really think it is a 'whatever' for you considering you were the first to broadcast your opinion on this thread. In fact, I'd say it's really important for you. An ego boost.

Oh, I'm so sorry that I use specific terms in order to *actually understand* what we're talking about.

The fact that you had to look for this term only shows -as I expected- that people who don't know anything about neuroscience will always indulge in their own beliefs instead of understanding how things properly work.

An ego boost.

Yeah, an ego boost because I don't buy pseudoquackery for the sole purpose of comforting myself. You're right...

I can't help but think that nothingness is awaiting us all after death. Sometimes nothingness is better than suffering on this terrible planet.

Computer Game

Life on earth is Level 1
When you die you goto Level 2
When you CTB it's a cheat to get to Level 2

When you sleep you are making a backup of your consciousness
Similar to with a computer with an external HD connected to it
If the computer crashes or dies you have a backup

When you die you have a backup

The same nothingness that you experienced before you were born.
This is what is happening in your brain now, nothing of magic.

When you die this will stop, and your consciousness will be gone forever.
People in the past didn't know that, so they started inventing heaven, spirits and afterlife.
As Stephen Hawking said
"I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail. There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark."

Afterlife does exist though one need not be religious in any shape or form , the transition between leaving the physical form and departing as a soul/spirit is practically instantaneous. When you arrive you shall find yourself in an other body and become a physical being again . The transition is seamless and painless , others will be there so no fear of being alone . A guide will escort you though more likely an Angel will perform this task , some people who have lived a good life are often given choices one of which is greeting newcomers . Being in a physical body there is obviously the need for sustenance which is provided and of course accommodation for you. Then it gets interesting as your book of life is opened to see what you were up to on Earth . What happens next depends on how you lived your life.
Most people deny any existence after death yet they base this ideology on what ? , do they throw a temper tantrum for the simple reason they neither wish it to be true or are they afraid of the consequences of their actions on Earth or could it simply be ego !
Those who quote science as their defense and logic opposing afterlife cannot comprehend that scientists on Earth are merely children playing in a sandbox irrespective of their discoveries.

You're acting is if you had prove for any of your claims. Fact is you don't, so why are you pretending you know what's going on after you die. You don't know more than anyone else in this forum, so why are you portraying your story as a fact. That's exactly the religious dogma I have an issue with: people pretending to have omniscience over everything.
What's your evidence? As far as I can tell, you're not dead and nobody ever came back. This is just another made up story.

I kind of sense there's a continuity of consciousness in some form or another. Now if (and I do mean if) consciousness is synonymous with suffering, then death seems not the ultimate escape from whatever living hell that makes us yearn for it. A scary thought I try not to dwell on.

Nobody knows what happens after death. The only plausible state humans can fathom is nothingness. But you definitely sound like an arrogant individual posting a link and believing that's the final say in a subject matter nobody has lived to talk about.

I posted about this in the "post-death possibilities" thread, but I'd like to be in a place like Paradise is described in Islam.

Chillin' with my wife in vast spaces of beauty and tranquility, free from pain and boredom.

Sounds beautiful. I'd like that as well. Although i wouldn't have a wife to share it with, something tells me i wouldn't need one in such a place to be happy. Still would be nice to have someone to share it with i suppose.

I just hope its nothing. But I have a hard time believing its just nothing because my brain cannot pinpoint what nothing is. Its an interesting subject to broach. I'm jumping from a 400+ foot bridge onto rock in the very near future. So I'll jump, fall at 116 mph for 5-6 seconds, then SPLAT...lights out and nothing? To me it feels like something out there gives us consciousness; awareness of our surrounding.

A human brain is just a body part that interprets electrical signals. Nikola Tesla discovered free energy (which was promptly suppressed by the powers that be), so those electrical impulses are perpetual. Some sort of device is simply needed to interpret those impulses. Who knows. I have no idea what happens at death. But to me, anything is better than this life so I'm all for whatever it is.

Sounds like interesting concept. What if level 2 will be worse than level 1 though? Can we restart back at level 1?

If you can copy yourself, then there is also possibility of running multiple instances of yourself simultaneously, might be interesting too.

I would also like access to my source code, so I can play and experiment with it.

All the possibilities :)

An afterlife seems quite unrealistic to me, human imagination and creativity can go a long way, and in the end I think that the belief in an afterlife is nothing more than a product of our fear of death.

One thing is certain: The consciousness you have in this life dies with you body. This is proven well enough with sufferers of brain injuries and diseases like Alzheimers: Changes to the brain cause fundamental changes to the consciousness and personality of that brain's owner.

Personally, I see no reason to believe in an afterlife of any kind.
