I've been self harming for years now, and there are some questions i've always asked myself that I don't know the answer to. I posted this on reddit but apparently it was "promoting self harm" (which it's not)

Firstly, is it normal to hesitate? I sit there with the blade to my skin with the full intent but as soon as I move my arm it's almost like i'm instinctively holding back, resulting in wounds that are not satisfactory for me. Is it iust me? Or is it a human reaction. Do I lack the resolve? I don't know. I just wish I could do the damage I used to, but it feels impossible. Secondly, does the hair on your arm have any affect on wounds? Should I shave my arms so I can get a cleaner cut? Or is it the blade thats dull? How do I tell when the blade is dull? Maybe it's the blade and my hair's fault. Maybe it's my fault.
Should I not cut in the shower? Does doing it dry help? I just want to go deeper, it's not enough for me.
Any advice or answers are appreciated. Thank you.

This is completely normal. . . this is called SI (survival instinct) I can tell you one thing about the hair and that is you have to shave it off with the blade to get the area free. . .

So just shave it free and then hold it with 2 fingers and pull it through

If you want to go deeper one cut is not enough you have to pull over it several times so if you have already reached the "beans" you have to pull further in which can really hurt. . .

To avoid infection I would recommend rose water or disinfectant. . .

Pay the most attention that you keep everything neat and please do not overdo it with the cuts. .

Some people are disgusted by scars and find you funny or "cringe".

You don't necessarily have to cut yourself in the shower. . . you can have a towel or something ready and when you have made the cut quickly put it on when you are done you can go take a shower and disinfect afterwards. . .
(I always do it this way and have had the best experience with it)

Thank you very much and take care of yourself

Im scarred from hundreds of cuts. Some of them required stiches but they arent very deep. Dont go deep bc ur not satisfied, even a shallow cut will make mental suffering easier, as some of it will be redirected to physical suffering. better do 5 small cuts than 1 very deep one. risk of infection and scars are smaller and they heal faster. Also u dont need to care about hair shower etc.
