"A 3D-printed capsule, destined for use in assisted suicide, may legally be operated in Switzerland, according to advice obtained by Exit International, the organisation that developed the 'Sarco' machine."

Looks comfy.

I swear there was a post floating around on Tumblr years ago joking about such a machine so seeing people actually trying to create it is pretty wild. Reminds me of the classic suicide booth in futurama too. (somebody legit beat me to posting it lmao)

In a more serious way this sounds legitimately awesome. I wonder how costs will compare to the current methods used.

Theoretically, the cost could be extremely low. It's just nitrogen that's used (assembly cost would be covered by a large number of customers). Things that could make it more expensive is if there is need for maintenance/staff and if people are too flimsy to re-use the things.

The 3D printing sounds like a gimmick.

Why not use a real coffin?

There are a bunch of mechanisms and shit, no? If a coffin was used as a base it would still be modified to such a heavy extent that building the entire thing from scratch wouldn't be a lot different, maybe? Idk. Btw, coffins might cost more than 3d-plastic or whatever.

Nothing printed 3D is more durable than if it were machined. If the gas could be 3D printed that would be useful. The gas is the most important part.

I suppose because Exit International is, I think, basically one guy, cheap is important.

It's liquid nitrogen that is used. Good luck with getting it. You also need a lot of equipment for the liquid. Nervous motions will ensure, one drop of the dangerous liquid will immediately destroy your tissue.

The 3D printing will costs you probably 7.500. For that money you can buy so much Nitrogen gas to make your whole bathroom to a "Sarco" without the risks of liquid Nitrogen. It's only a public relation show so far to get more customers for the PPH, where the 3D printer plans shall be published.

Allegedly.

3D printing would be interesting if it allowed people to commit suicide in private. Hardly practical for most considering the cost. But at least it would serve a purpose.

So the idea is to provide assisted suicide without having to rely on doctors. But then why not open an AS organization in Switzerland that provides AS using an exit bag? I know most people probably aren't comfortable with that method, but who says people are going to like this Sarco machine? I hope Nitschke did some sort of survey to gauge people's interest in this, otherwise he is wasting a lot of time and money.

After the Dignitas desaster with that method I don't believe, it will be done again in Switzerland.

He refered to the exit bag method. Dignitas tried it 4 times, but they used the wrong equipment for that method and so one case was so shocking to the prosecutors and there was a massive uprise, even the guides were concerned about, what they saw, that they did it never again.

Due to WWII gas is something, which is hard to make it look friendly here in Europe.

Some 1,300 people died by assisted suicide in Switzerland in 2020 using the services of the country's two largest assisted suicide organisations, Exit (no connection to Exit International) and Dignitas.

I already wrote in another thread that this is mostly a publicity stunt, at least for now. Articles like this are free marketing for Exit International. 3D printing and AI are popular terms, and work well in this context. I'm surprised it doesn't have Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and other bells and whistles.

The device itself is basically a small gas chamber with liquid nitrogen container underneath it, and should operate reliably if made properly. 3D printing on this scale is expensive and makes sense only if device is reusable. It is cheaper to fly to Switzerland, than to 3D print one for yourself. Acquiring and handling liquid nitrogen is also not beginner friendly.

Well, since the mechanism of the Sarco machine is identical to that of the exit bag method, wouldn't you expect similar "disasters" to happen with it too?

No, with such a device or a premium Scuba full face mask or a hood which would fit the requirements, no O2 would leak into the set, which was the problem. With a perfect set you breath 3 times, unconsciousness, 10 minutes later the brain is dead, after 20 more minutes the body. No pain, nothing. Only N and gas can ensure a peaceful death without pain if done right.

It's a publicity stunt and a way for Dr. PN to gift money even more. Barbiturates (or any of the other suitable anesthetic combinations) are dirt cheap (and likely cheaper than the gas they will put in the Sarco) when acquired through legal means. 99% of people (and their family) would choose an anesthetic death over the Dr. PN maybe it works, maybe it doesn't, time to pay another unexpected $300 fee, inert gas chamber any day of the week tbh.

Sounds not good. If I am correct, exit capsule is used instead of exit bag in this project. If I understood correctly it works like this, you go inside the capsule and release the liquid nitrogen. The liquid nitrogen turns into gas and is replaced by air inside the capsule. Since nitrogen is homogeneously dispersed in the room air, how do we push O2 out and fill it with N? With this method, the O2 in the capsule will decrease at a very slow rate. How many liters of N per minute does the transition of liquid nitrogen to gaseous mean? If N is homogeneously distributed in the capsule, how do you know how much O2 you have pushed out? If I'm correct, this would cause unconsciousness to take a very long time and cause tachypnea. The fact that someone is conscious of being in that capsule to die, and that comes with the psychological pressure, seems like a pretty disturbing scenario. In the classical inert gas method, almost 100% nitrogen or helium is inhaled, after removing all the air from the lungs. It allows it to work fast and be peaceful. The capsule does not seem to meet these requirements.
