Do you think if someone becomes a burden to their family and society, let's say from serious illness where they can't care for themselves and cost a lot of tax payers dollars, they should be given the option to be humanely euthanized? This is the main reason these right to die bills get denied. The naysayers think these people will be coerced into euthanasia by their doctor or family member wanting inheritance money.

Dollars shouldn't be a reason, that just sounds dystopian, unethical and certainly will be abused/exploited.
It is difficult to set a bar, a threshold for something like maid. But we are not even at the point where it's accepted for people well past any threshold, like a painful, untreatable illness.

In Canada painful,untreatable illnesses are accepted for Maid. The US is lagging far behind.

People should be able to have the choice and peaceful methods. They shouldn't have to pay $10,000 for a painless passing either. Death is already expensive. In the US privatization of prisons and detention centers has been disgustingly profitable. That money comes from tax payer dollars. They'd rather criminalize and exploit prison labor (multibillion dollar business) than think humanely on people's suffering and euthanasia. The US Supreme Court (batshit right wing corrupt) ok'd criminalizing homelessness.

Unfortunately not, I'm in the US and couldn't afford it nor have the support.

People are even not allowed to die naturally because the equipment-based medicine which is used for this unnatural live prolongation is very profitable.

If euthanasia is controlled by the state the problem of impatient heirs would be solved. But the state could abuse these institution, which is what happened in my country 90 years ago.

By the way sleeping pills combined with an agend used to treat nausea and vomiting should garant a peaceful death.

Are we assuming they want to die? They'd obviously need to be assessed to make sure they weren't being coerced by anyone. Plus- assessed to see whether they qualify for more support.

It's a really sad state of affairs and ideally- poverty shouldn't be a reason but- it likely is. Financial worries are prevalent here. Whether people are able to work or not.

Still- there's only a finite amount of money I suppose. Can the state force a family to finance their adult children? Is everyone who doesn't want to work, unable to? Does everyone qualify for benefits? If they simply can't get money- their families won't help them and they aren't deemed suitable to qualify for benefits- what kind of life are they going to be able to lead with no money? Who has to fund them? Other people working? What if they don't want to work either though?!!

Sometimes I like the idea that we should all be able to say: 'You want us to stay alive? Then, pay us!' But nah- I don't think that would work!

Ideally, there ought to be a system that supports genuine cases. It's bordering a hollocaust if we start trying to get rid of large non contributive members of society- the homeless, the sick, the elderly. Including allowing their situations to become so dire that they are left with only the bleakest of choices.

The reality though is- I don't expect our societies can actually fully support all the genuine cases and all the people who just don't want to contribute. So- they're likely to suffer. If we can't stop their suffering in life- shouldn't a peaceful exit be available to them if they want it?

How about another question though... Should a person who can work and does pay taxes be able to access assisted suicide? Or- should they be obligated to stay alive to fund themselves and, everyone else?
