Hi all - trying to share a quality post about my inert gas / exit bag setup (US resident, connections may vary), and linked similar posts + megathread below

  • Tank: 40 CF Helium (Product title: 100% Helium UN 1046 Full Bottle For Welding).
    • 1749079556225
    • 22 inches tall, ~25 pounds
    • Experience: Got delivered from online welding store, and was assured via email it was 100% purity. They also had Argon available but this seemed "easier", but likely make finding other hoses/adapters tougher. It came in a thick cardboard box which made transport easier. It sat in the trunk of my car for a few days (with driving around) to keep it hidden while a friend stayed for the weekend.
    • Issues: The main hiccup here was the packaging requiring a signature with no option to do it online, so I had to pickup the gas from a FedEx distribution center, but no problems. They looked it up and asked me to get my ID ready while they grabbed it, and asked if it was alcohol and I said nope - that's it!
    • Note: The megathread has quite a few mentions of suppliers, specifically AirGas only sells to businesses now. I don't think we can share links (right?), but my shop sounded sketchy but seems legit, the few I used were call things like WeldingRUs and WeldingSupplyUSA.com lol

  • Regulator/Flowmeter: Miller | Smith Helium Flowmeter Regulator - CGA 580
    • 1749079648042
    • Note: Mine was a combo unit, but please ensure you have both a regulator to control gas flowing out of the tank, and a flowmeter to monitor precise output to the bag). CGA 580 is the standard US connector from my understanding
    • Experience/Issues: The picture on the website made it appear that gas output should be on the top of the meter. I used ChatGPT Live Video to ask questions to make sure I was being safe and everything was hooked up correctly. It was able to provide me the right information on hose barbs and adapters/fittings, but those were also confusing and a standard hose would ensure less human or mechanical errors (see below).

  • Hose: Weldcote ARG14X10 Argon Hose With Inert Gas Fitting, 10 Ft
    • You have three options:
      • 1. Try to get an included hose with your regulator/flowmeter (Recommended)
        • Experience/Issues: This was where I almost just gave up and went a handgun route. The regulator/flowmeter I purchased was supposed to come with a hose (identical to the one I purchased, less the hose.) They were out of stock of that SKU, so I got the non-hose version thinking hose barbs and fittings would be fine (they weren't lol). Also ordered online and delivered without a signature, no issues.
        • 1749079668746
      • 2. Purchase a hose similar to above & below with the "inert gas fitting" (Second Best)
        • 1749080082219
        • This is what I ended up doing! Shipped and delivered with no issues.
      • 3. Locate and buy all of the below (Last Resort- most likely to fail or order wrong parts)
        • This is what I started with, so just spare parts lying around, but pictured below in order should you need it. Sizing here matters a ton - frankly I don't have the spoons to explain it now, should my CTB fail, I'll update :)
        • Screenshot 2025 06 04 at 64323PM
        • Vinyl hose
        • 1749080191173
        • Inert nipple
        • 1749080449898
        • Inlet nut
        • Screenshot 2025 06 04 at 64241PM
        • Stainless steel nose clamp

  • Exit Bag: DIY - Turkey Roasting Bag (2pk), tape, cord and lock
    • I hit the attachment limit, but same thing, will update with a video if my CTB fails (let's face it, we need a newer version of "Doing It with Chi")

ItemCost
Helium$249.99
Flowmeter/Regulator$205.44
Hose$31.62
Exit Bag Materials$30.00
8in Wrench (required to$15.00

Thank you! I especially appreciated how you pointed out the most likely failure points (and mistakes...).
Good luck with whatever you choose to do, godspeed, and thank you thank you thank you ;))

Thank you! I'm going to grab some Taco Bell lol and watch this thread for a bit and hopefully CTB later tonight. Any questions or things you'd be curious about in your own setup?

I learned a lot, it's somewhat technical but after reading enough it starts to make sense. My biggest frustration was not having the spoons to track down the right parts / do thorough and repetitive research, not to mention having to reach out with questions - I visited a local public-facing welding shop to find the right hose/connector; I was scared as shit but he was polite and helpful, didn't probe at all. They offered to order it with a 14 day turnaround, but I was able to find a welding shop with free next day delivery and got the hose that way, instead.

I haven't fully committed to this method yet, I wouldn't know what to ask. I like this method particularly, both because it's harmless so long as pressure is handled properly and because it requires a bit of calculations and engineering, which I don't mind, but we'll see.

I'm not sure what time it is where you live, but we may catch up later ;) In case we don't, thank you for this post and the previous one; something about your posts feels eerily familiar, it feels like I'm reading something I could've already written, if things had gone just a little differently.

Godspeed my friend, wherever that takes you

Excellent write-up.
How did the delivery go? My one nervous aspect about ordering gas online is getting weird looks from the delivery guy while signing. Planning on ordering argon from another supplier, but worried its going to be obvious I'm having gas delivered to a residential apartment.

Thanks! Any questions or things I can add/clarify for others? Do you think a new exit bag video would be helpful?

I did a quick search - assuming delivery drivers complete 75-125 packages every shift, do you really think they care THAT much about contents and whatnot? To them, you're just a name/number on a cardboard box that needs a signature quick so they can move on (plus they may have considerations about the sticker contents). All that to say I wouldn't worry about it, although could depend on where you order from and whatnot.

Again, just double down on what you're using it for and why you need it, and I think being able to answer 1 or 2 objections from others is more than enough! :)

Thanks for sharing the info.
Ive got a Nitrogen system all ready for use. The exit bag remains the weakest part of mt system. I used a roasting bag but still not sure what to do with the hose. Maybe tape it to my neck? I'm planning to attempt in my car, fastening my seat belt and tilting the seat a bit to the back.

I think in the car is a solid choice!

If you're curious how I did it - basically lead the hose from my side, up my back, with the hose hanging over my shoulder, basically parallel with my spine and the hose is outputting above my ear. Does that make sense? From there, once the hose was in position, I threw a sweater on top to keep the hose in place!

Haven't had time to go over everything, yet, still the workday :). Gonna quit that soonish though hopefully

Yeah I realized most delivery drivers don't give a crap, half the time my signature packages get left on the doorway without a signature anyway. Just getting a large heavy package with explosive labels on it probably will raise eyebrows lol. I have a cover story and can play-act fairly well, but these are the things I will fold on if pressed.

Can't start on all this for another two months because I am moving apartments and don't want anybody to find a gas canister or other equipment. But this info is helpful

Based on your other threads, hope you find peace and the path that is right for you

Thank you! I was unsuccessful this morning, but ended up quitting my job and shaving my head so we're doing gooooood lol.

I can't imagine wanting to ctb but having to wait until after moving... that fucking blows. Take your time, try to have fun along the way, etc. The other day I got TWO flat tires via a pothole on my way to a coffee date. Naturally my entire brain and body was freaking out but then I realized that this shit doesn't fucking matter - I was annoyed about missing the date and "wasting time" waiting on a tech, but the stress about money is irrelevant :) Hope you're able to find those moments, too.

That sounds it can work. So the hose is not connected to the bag in any way?

With my current method, that's correct. The hose is pretty thick and heavy so I didn't want to risk ripping/tearing the back by taping or securing it in some way. The hose is secured to my shoulder using the sweater, and the bag is secure through the elastic cord/lock, so even if I move around everything should stay in place! 🤞

Going on dates while trying to CTB lol? "Where do you see yourself in 5 years?" "Oh well,".

But yeah I saw your unsuccessful. That's whats problematic about this method, there's so much to mess up. But it's doable. And I already have SN as a backup.

Not looking to immediately CTB. Planning on next year-ish. Got an unexpected nephew coming so delayed CTB as to not traumatize sister and give her time with her child. Just putting the absolute bare minimum into my job until I get fired then go do whatever I want until spring or fall next year. Thinking of taking a trip down to Mexico to get some benzos for CTB anxiety. Then just kick back on the beach.
