I have an anxiety problem, many crises, even though I don't realize it. I need to study to pass a test that I really want. It will define my future, but I have problems concentrating, memorizing etc... Does anyone have a method to improve this? I take anxiety medication but it doesn't seem to be helping much, I talk to my doctor about it every time I see him. He says exercise would help. But I can't do it right now.

I went through exactly the same when I was last studying, and it was always an issue at school also. It could just be that the system was never designed for people like us. In the actual workplace I've often done quite fine and even excelled.

The only thing that got me through it was just forcing myself to push on and keep trying no matter how much I hated it. Obviously it helps to get rid of distractions.

I have this too, although I haven't studied in many years. Good sleep, exercise, and cleaning up your diet will all help. Vitamins B and D too. There are some pretty good "brain foods" out there, like salmon and walnuts, but they're not always practical to eat. Good luck.

Is this a regular doctor or a psychiatrist? If it is a regular doctor, and if you are able to, you might try speaking to a psychiatrist instead. If your meds are not helping you, possibly you need a different medication or an additional medication. Also, are you seeing anyone for the other type of therapy? Possibly a therapist (if you already have one) would be able to give you strategies for improving your studying. I know there ARE specific learning methods to help people with concentration problems, but I don't know what they are.

Do you do any treatment? Look for a doctor, and therapist, they will help you, don't make the ctb decision before taking care of yourself. We'll be here for anything.

For a study method, if it helps, shortly before an exam--usually that morning--I would go through the material and write down what I wanted to remember and/or thought would be on the test. Depending on the subject I'd also make my own notes and observations. Doing this helped me more better recall the information during the exam.

For anxiety I try to find a way to focus. If it starts to well up I try to slow and concentrate on something. An observation in the material, a song in my head, a memory of something nice, even looking at the elements of a pencil, anything to work toward calmness and concentration.

I'm sorry to hear about your concentration issues. I struggle with concentration too. Is the problem with concentrating the same all day long? Or is concentrating easier during certain parts of the day? If it's easier, say, soon after you wake up, try to study during that time.
Also, although this is cliche, make sure to have your phone far away. When I'm reading, I leave the phone in another room. The mere sight of it can make me salivate for quick entertainment.

Not directed towards me, but I figured I'd throw in my thoughts.

I avoid therapy like the plague because I refuse to confide in someone who would be ready and willing to detain me indefinitely due to my philosophical views (which would be all therapists, due to their mandatory reporting rules). Always consider if you are willing to face a heightened risk of detention and humiliation when considering if therapy is right for you!

My ADHD is a big reason I want to ctb. I was put on Vyvanse and then Adderall XR and both those aren't working for me :(

When I manage to study, I don't remember much afterwards. And about therapy, I have no problem with that. Could do for sure. Starting to study is difficult.

Because I have anxiety and panic disorder, my doctor doesn't want to give me any medication for focus, so I don't know what to do. :(

I struggle with concentration and memory too. I bought some fish oil and gummy vitamins for help. I don't cook very often so I know a lot of people say diet and food helps, but it takes a lot of time to prepare food and sometimes I just don't have the energy.
I don't even have any friends and I think that makes life more challenging. Having motivation/energy is a huge difficulty for me.

Let's see if what I will tell you next is of any use to you. Although it seems that I have a good memory because I remember absolutely everything of my life since I was a child, the fact is that my short-term memory is failing everywhere and I have many shortcomings to memorize long texts.
I spent years failing with an average grade of zero and repeating courses until I found a solution for an important part of the subjects (I have a limit that I can not exceed and I can not give more of myself).

For example, in mathematics, short-term memory, concentration and abstraction are very important. So you can practice these three things separately. I did it by drawing, reading, playing video games and especially with puzzles, sudokus, mazes, board games..., then I practiced every day the multiplication table, I wrote down on a separate sheet certain rules that I often used in all the problems or little tricks to compact the problem as much as possible and make it easier to work.

As for Physics and Chemistry I used a lot of mnemonic resources to have to memorize the minimum and while other people wrote down on a sheet a lot of formulas I wrote down a maximum of three and extracted all the others from the initial three or with combinations of these together with mnemonic resources.

In the history subject I would just look for other sources that explained the same thing but in a simpler or more understandable way, then I would rewrite what was in the book in my own way, in my own words, and when I finished I would read it. I could not memorize texts, so I limited myself to find out what had happened at a certain time and left for two days before memorizing some dates (in what century it happened, spring, summer, winter and some specific days).
As for the outlines, notes (of any subject, including mathematics) to study, I did not let them occupy more than half of a sheet, I had everything very schematized for not having to make much effort to review as many times as necessary. Then in the exam I explained calmly and in my own way what was asked of me.

That's how I went from failing to getting almost the highest grade.

Summary: Compact the information to the maximum to memorize the minimum and work the lacks with resources that in principle have nothing to do with the subject but that significantly improve the study of this (video games).

And another thing that I put as a rule to pass, and it worked, is that the day before the exam I used it for anything that I felt like studying... I relaxed a lot, I slept better and the next day I was much calmer.
