I don't understand why people today get angry or make fun of a "depressed" person just because they are feeling bad. I really don't understand, because most of the people who do this are kind of concerned about this situation.

It's because non-depressed people don't understand what it's like to be depressed all the time and lack the ability to empathize. Sometimes there are ones that try to help or understand, but there are also the ones that think our reasons are invalid, therefore they will either make fun of us or get angry at us, but all it does is make us feel worse about ourselves.

Yes that the main problem, if you never been in that situation I don't think you can imagine how hard it is. That why people here are so caring and supportive.

Really good point.
That's humans in a nutshell.

Fear plays a big role in all human relations. People just can't handle fear, it's really pathetic.

Those people don't understand. They think it's like having a bad day but it's not.

Depressed people seem to often be seen as weak or subhuman. People think that we should be able to just snap out of it and move on, but depression runs deeper than that.

My opinion on this is that i think people have become desensitised to depression.
The term gets thrown around too loosely.
People are treated too quickly with anti depressants. And sadly it has been abused by people who arent clinically depressed, mainly to get time off work or benefits.(Im not referring to anyone on here) its almost become trendy to be depressed and taking medicine.
Clinical depression on the other hand is a different kettle of fish and the worse thing ever.
I think people mock it because its being abused as a condition and empathy is wearing thin.

Yeah it's running deeper AKA bad genetics (the short straw of the genetic lottery)

I agree, but don't make the mistake of thinking it's just because they don't understand.

I had a lady friend who had been through depression and considered suicide herself.
I spoke to her about how I was feeling, and she just called me negative, implied I am toxic (didn't say it outright) and cut ties with me, citing that she "doesn't need bs in her life" as the reason!

This person has been through it herself, and is also a paramedic!
On many levels she should know better.

The trouble with her is that her 'recovery journey' has turned into pretending that everything is honey and rainbows.
She's turned into the kind of person that uploads things like "happiness comes from within" on social media.
So she doesn't see the world as it is, and pushes away anything that seems to contradict her internal flowers and bunnies narrative.

I think a big part of it is also the world we live in today. Things seem so much more hopeless and bleak compared to when my parents were my age.

I'm all for people being happy but it really rubs me the wrong way when people are constantly sharing things like that.

Perhaps some people are just in denial about it and don't want to have their bubble popped. I guess I didn't think of that, but I'm sorry that she pushed you away like that.

I always used to think its a combination of a lack of understanding and an instinctual need humans have to compare themselves to others. The lack of understanding prevents them from truly emphathising with people with depression, and then the need to compare often leads people to consider depressed/mentally ill people as below them. Which in turn leads treating sufferers badly/like they're less competant/strong as everyone else.

It seems to me like people resent depressed people because they feel obliged to interact with us but cba to deal with the problems that come with us
