Sorry- this is personal OP, obviously only answer if you feel comfortable. I'm just curious really. Do you have the support of your doctors in your decision? I would have thought that would be a factor. Almost a referral type of thing. I'm sure we'll all be curious to know what happens. I hope they can help you.

I do remember seeing a documentary on TV- literally more than a decade ago though- so- I don't remember what or where. But, it seemed like a fairly young woman in her twenties. It followed her experience with one of the clinics- again, I don't remember which. But, I believe hers were solely mental illness issues but, very long-term and she had gone through lots of different treatments. She was accepted in the end and then, she backed out. I wasn't feeling all that charitable at the time. I thought- you actually had a peaceful way out of this at your fingertips there. Chances are, I'll have to settle for a bridge. I wonder if she recovered or went again later.

My suffering is due to 2 mini-strokes so were about 14 years apart. After the first one I had all the neurological tests done, and everything came back normal. So I just took some medication for the insomnia. Eventually recovered got off all medication I was back almost 100% for 10 years.

Then the second mini stroke hit, and I didn't even bother getting tested, because I know now that mini-strokes rarely show up on the tests. Yet they can cause horrendous physical problems. So my answer to your question is no, doctors don't know how to diagnose this, and have very limited resources to treat it. This is why I'm hopeful with Pegasos, because they don't seem to care much about medical records (so far).

I'm in a similar predicament. And with that it also makes it more challenging to "prove" medical suffering.

So it becomes a lot of red tape. Here we are trying to get past the bureaucracy only to be met with more of it. I hope Pegasos has managed to accommodate this.

Do we even know this is true? That user "MeowTheFlemishCat" has a history of dramatic posts as well as stalking/harassing/doxxing a woman trying to get her to reply to him or else he will kill himself. I wouldn't be surprised if this is another attempt, but if this is actually legit for once it would be interesting.

@MeowTheFlemishCat was just approved recently for assisted dying (PAD) in Belgium!

Her request was granted early September, 2024.

This is her thread: https://sanctioned-suicide.net/threads/euthanasia-for-ocd-a-few-months-away.179140/

Here is some very solid proof that public opinion and global policies are changing quickly for the better around the world!

Do not die painfully!

Write to your local representative and advocate for legal assisted dying in your country today! The sooner we do this, the sooner we ALL qualify!

To be 100% safe, do not give them the impression that you yourself are suicidal, just talk about wanting to help others who are suffering. This will send an even more powerful political message with no risk to you.

Very interesting, very happy for them and a little jealous

In the Netherlands, the number of euthanasia requests due to psychological suffering has risen in recent years. Of the 9,000 euthanasia cases carried out in 2023, 138 involved psychological suffering. This represents about 1.5% of the total—a small figure, but one that indicates an increase compared to previous years when it was around 1%. Additionally, the number of patients under 30 in this group has also risen; last year, there were 22 individuals from this age category.

In a recent ruling by the euthanasia committee in 2023, euthanasia was approved for a person suffering from severe psychological issues, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Despite intensive treatment, there were no prospects for improvement, leading to the conclusion that the situation was hopeless. The physician followed a careful procedure and consulted with an independent psychiatrist, who confirmed that all due diligence requirements had been met.
For more detailed information, you can consult the ruling from the committee on their website:

I was convinced that in Switzerland, they don't do euthanasia for psychological/psychiatric problems. and I only now find out that it is done in Belgium. are you absolutely sure that it is for depression? I repeat in Italy they throw you in jail if you help someone go to Switzerland but we are talking about terminally ill people or people with rare diseases, intubated for years etc. So I wonder where you get these certainties from.

I was going mainly by their philosophy as it is listed on their website. I'm starting to learn by posts from people with real experiences, that it's not as easy to qualify as I initially expected. At this point I don't know for sure exactly what their criteria is, but I do know that it is more lenient for sure that the other Swiss organization called Dignitas. I am personally inquiring with them about my own situation, and I will let you know how that turns out

if I'm not indiscreet I can ask you what association you're asking but above all if you want to tell me why you're here. even in private if you want. as you understand it's for mental health depression

I'm asking again, has this person proven to you that they got approved or are you just taking their word without evidence?
Or did I miss the evidence?

Great for them but it will still take too long for the rest of us to wait around for others to come around to our wishes for an end to our various lives of despair. It could easily be multiple decades, if ever, before humans are legally and easily provided euthanasia that is afforded so easily to pets.

Think about that. A dog, if suffering OR NOT, has access to a peaceful death just for a couple hundred bucks or so anytime for the asking and payment, yet never for me even if I for example, lose my crap ass job while battling cancer and lose all that I own in the process. For us humans, we are looked in the face and told life is a gift and similar BS no matter what horrors are thrust upon us. Waiting for legal euthanasia is not going to help those in the depths of despair today.

Exactly, this poster has an agenda they push. They are not one of us.

Belgium is one of the very few countries that has euthansia for mental illness. I'm jealous
It took TheFlemishCat 3 years to get approved. There are still conditions to fulfill and after the trial of Tine Nys (utfs - f = fine :-) they want the conditions even more strict. For instance, instead of 2 psychiatrists they suggest 3. It is almost to impossible to fine even 1, let alone 2. And they both have to approve you! (And then you need a doctor that will actually euthanise you.) In September a known Flemish/Belgian actor Aron Wade (again - utfs :-) was euthanised, because of 'unbearable mental suffering'. Can you imagine what this has done to the waiting lists!? I wanted to check out reakiro.be (they offer help for this kind of euthanasia), but people my province are temporary refused (some exceptions). Reakiro hopes to help them January 2025 at the earliest.

I haven't filed a request (yet), but can you imagine the frustration, the stress that comes with such a request?

If you're suffering from a terminal (physical) disease, then they will aid you. Not if it's mental; that's only reserved for Belgians (under the right conditions).

I'm afraid it's not so easy, even in Belgium, unfortunately.
It's not.
These four countries (Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Switzerland) are paving the way and proving that there is no "slippery slope" from allowing legal assisted dying for those suffering solely from mental illness. There is rock hard proof and stats on the increasing number of cases that are approved in these countries every year. Other countries are paying attention and learning from these cases.

We have to have a certain amount of trust for our fellow members when they report things to us. If we don't, then it weakens as a group. We know for a fact that hundreds of people qualify solely from mental illness every year, especially in Belgium and the Netherlands. There is no reason to believe that our fellow member isn't one of them.
'suffer solely from mentall illness', yeah, that's not really true. Someone in a manic/depressed/psychotic state will not be approved for instance, even though bipolar and schizo are considered to be incurable, so you have to be 'of sound mind'. The unbearable mental suffering has to be caused by an incurable (mental or phsyical) disease. I remember reading conditions in the Netherlands are even more strict.

EDIT: Hundreds of people? Last year 3.423 people were euthanised in Belgium. Only 1,4% (48) of those were based on mental disorders. Numbers have been rising over the years, but the vast majority did not suffer from mental disorders.

After the trial of Tyne Nys (use startpage.com not Google) there were arguments that in case of mental suffering there should be 3 instead of 2 psychiatrists. I remember looking for psychiatrist after my guy got his pension. It's next to impossible; it's like no one is taking on new patients. Can you imagine how hard it would be to find 2 (or 3) psychiatrist who want to take part in you, ending yourself!?
@Praying 4 a Miracle

BTW do you think TheFlemishCat would appreciate it that you're putting him in the spotlight like this? Or did you discuss this with him before posting?
