@MeowTheFlemishCat was just approved recently for assisted dying (PAD) in Belgium!

Her request was granted early September, 2024.

This is her thread: https://sanctioned-suicide.net/threads/euthanasia-for-ocd-a-few-months-away.179140/

Here is some very solid proof that public opinion and global policies are changing quickly for the better around the world!

Do not die painfully!

Write to your local representative and advocate for legal assisted dying in your country today! The sooner we do this, the sooner we ALL qualify!

To be 100% safe, do not give them the impression that you yourself are suicidal, just talk about wanting to help others who are suffering. This will send an even more powerful political message with no risk to you.

Our own members are starting to qualify for assisted dying based on mental illness alone! How much more proof do we need, that there's hope for all of us using a safe, legal, and peaceful method???

Wait what, my memory may be shitty but I could have sworn that user was somebody who kept on talking about how they were crippled with incurable chronic pain and how everybody who isn't dealing with chronic pain should be grateful for their lives and all. I never knew that they only had OCD and nothing else

Well, I suppose that in order to be accepted you must suffer and justify a very great and incurable pain. where I live, euthanasia is only allowed if you have an incurable disease.

Belgium is exceptional. There's no way this will be happening to many other countries soon and especially not here in germany. I certainly won't wait.

this is the best response to all of this. OP, trust me when I say I ride hard in real life for this cause. pushing people to basically expose themselves (I know it wasn't meant in a bad way) esp people on here, is tough objectively.

I agree this shit matters but I can also clearly see that the kind of progress we'd like to see in our various lifetimes, not only in xyz countries, is highly unlikely. I won't be waiting either.

In Italy it is not even taken into consideration for people suffering from degenerative diseases, or terminal cancers etc. everyone goes to Switzerland. In my opinion, any person who has an illness, even a mental one, if he suffers and it is unbearable to live, why not help him with something legal? Instead of finding ourselves then dealing with any type of suicide. It is unfair .... I had my dog put down because he no longer even held his transfusions, his blood was liquid, why make him suffer? The same goes for us, sorry for the outburst

It's possible that he or she is male, gender is listed as other. I just assumed that he was a she because of his or her pseudonym.

Yes. Yet she ignores it only when it benefits her.

This is not a member I'm gonna have sympathy for. You belittle us yet we should be celebrating her? No, you reap what you sow. Doing what you criticize other's for is very low.

Edits,

ijustwishtodie, the red text you mean is her signature.

She doesn't directly answer the direct question of whether she is suffering from physical or emotional pain, but judging by what she is saying, I would assume likely it's emotional pain. Also, if there was a lot of incurable physical pain, then this would be the reason for her qualifying for assisted dying, and not OCD. It does look like she is qualifying based solely on mental illness.

She started a thread called "Euthanasia for OCD a few months away" on Sept 17, 2024 where she discusses her situation with people, and many people have posted comments. It's still viewable and on SaSu.

You keep saying 'her' as a guess cause their username/image refers to cats I guess? That's really weird and presumptuous especially with everything this user has shown in the past (including a lengthy suicide note that called out people in their life by their names and used their pictures without their consent) seems to indicate they are a guy. If you dont know just use a gender neutral title as its weird weird and rude to assume someone as a woman cause you gendered their username.

The only gender-neutral word available instead of he or she seem to be they, them, and their. Using these words seems more rude and weird to me because they are all plural. What is a better word to use if you don't know their actual gender?

It was in a thread that admins removed due to the incredible personal nature of the note linked in a google drive. Due to the sensitive nature of it and it having been removed from the site even if I had a copy I would not feel comfortable sharing it as it was 10s of pages of a very personal life story filled with real images of themselves and friends.

'They' can be both plural and gender neutral and can act as either. They can refer to a group or someone of unknown identity. It's an incredibly common usage and not offensive.

I don't have sympathy for them either but I still am envious at how they managed to die peacefully if they actually did get access to euthanasia. Also, what does the red text in your image mean?

Oh yeah, I actually forgot about that but seeing you mention this reminded me about it again. They were basically publicly shaming somebody in their lives and that was so weird

Sorry, but it seems to me very difficult to believe that if there are "only" (sorry for this word) TOC, even in Belgium. Medical files are secret, maybe there is another reason why assisted suicide has been accepted and I'm happy for this member if it was his choice and decision. But for TOC, really I can't believe that.

These four countries (Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Switzerland) are paving the way and proving that there is no "slippery slope" from allowing legal assisted dying for those suffering solely from mental illness. There is rock hard proof and stats on the increasing number of cases that are approved in these countries every year. Other countries are paying attention and learning from these cases.

We have to have a certain amount of trust for our fellow members when they report things to us. If we don't, then it weakens as a group. We know for a fact that hundreds of people qualify solely from mental illness every year, especially in Belgium and the Netherlands. There is no reason to believe that our fellow member isn't one of them.

Yes, but for the moment none of these countries really allow assisted suicide for mental problems. Or I'm wrong ? I wonder where did you find proofs of assisted suicide for mental problems as main reason. If there are other health serious problems causing sufferings as main reason, it's of course different.

There are many reliable sources for that information, such as the National Institute of Health in the US. While it does not currently represent a huge percentage of the total Euthanasia cases, the numbers are climbing quickly. This is why we need to create political pressure to increase access for far more people who are suffering intensely to qualify.

We have something on our side in this battle that no one can take away from us. The fact that to allow human beings to suffer chronically long-term for any reason is simply wrong. We would never allow our pets to suffer this way, so most people understand that it's not right to expect humans to.

Things are obviously not where we want them to be right now, but there are currently hundreds of people each year in multiple countries in our world, who qualify for euthanasia solely because they are suffering from mental health issues. This is progress, because it's a step towards giving access to everyone who is suffering intensely from any health issue whether physical or psychological.

I personally suffer from physical problems, but the side effect from that is that I'm miserable, which could be considered psychological suffering. The two are not completely separate, they're intertwined. Chronic physical problems usually cause anxiety and depression, so if people with chronic depression qualify for assisted dying, then basically anyone who is suffering for any health reason qualifies, and that is the goal here.

Governments keeping people alive when they're suffering intensely, for financial gain, has got to be the most evil thing I can think of in this life.

Ok, but it's the first time I read things like that. For my part, Dignitas (Swotzerland) answered I won't have the green light, impossible. I wonder why it's "no" for me if it's "yes" for other people with sufferings of mental illness. The woman I called told me that it's ALWAYS "no" for people suffering of mental illness (long depression or whatever else). Maybe different with other organisms in Switzerland ? Infos about that ?

There are two organizations in Switzerland, Dignitas and Pegasos. Pegasos is far more liberal with their regulations than Dignitas. I would definitely try them.

Pegasos believes that it is the human right of every rational adult of sound mind, regardless of their state of health, to choose the manner and timing of their death.

Judging by their philosophy, it should almost be a guarantee that they will say yes.

I personally inquired inquired with Dignitas to see if I qualify, and they wanted my medical records, etc. I could just tell that I wasn't going to qualify with them. Pegasos is completely different. They're not that concerned about our health situation. They're concerned about our right to choose when and how we die. It states this very clearly on their website.

I've even heard rumors that they will accept some people based solely on bereavement, or even financial reasons, if they are elderly.
