Does anyone else find it mind boggling that our conscious minds are allowed to go to dark places and act on such thoughts, yet the subconscious will do anything it can to scupper our plans once we get going?

They share one body, but are so often at odds. If the subconscious doesn't trust us to make good decisions, then why not put us on permanent auto pilot. Communication between the two is sometimes so poor, and the primitive mind rewards us for good behaviour I.e eating, drinking, exercising, as if we're the slave and they the master.

Life is beautiful, but also just a 'little' bit bizarre..

Yeah- I can't help but think our conscious mind has broken away from our instinctual, primal brain. Broken away from nature itself in fact. I can't see how concepts like anti-natilism and suicide fit with every creatures core drives to reproduce and survive. I guess it just comes down to whether our sheer will can overcome all that instinctual crap in the end.

The primal instinct is the opposite of godhood, it is fleshy, earthly, vulgar...
And the mind on the other hand, is our divine atribute accessible to us. Our highest and deepest desires resides there. With the mind, we can conjure whole fantasy universes in our head, we can discover the mysteries of the Universe etc.... This is a far more free existence, but unfortunately, what you call subconscious or primal instinct is a plane of consciousness that overlaps the mental plane. We can daydream about a fantasy world, and then we get hungry, sexual thoughts comes in etc..., and it overlaps the dream. We're slave to it.
The most exposed layer of consciousness (the one on top of all others, at the surface) is this one. If we remove the body, we cease to exist in the physical plane and this layer is destroyed. That's the only way to fully exist in the mental plane (imagination).

The ultimate experiment perhaps!? You could easily argue that freethinking has helped mankind achieve so much. Yet, the individual often suffers under the complexity of it all.

Yes, a team effort. They need each other, but they're all too often lacking in the final third.
They've got the basics right at the back, the dependable, unsung heroes that never steal the show. But the freethinking forwards? They keep missing the target, thus the team never wins and they sink more and more into the abyss.

A member used to post now and then that this forum was 'evolution at work'. (Can't remember who it was now...) Still- it used to puzzle me... Do they mean we are the more evolved- seeing everything for what it is. OR- is evolution picking us off?!! Making us self destruct- as it were!

I don't know. If we are still living according to the principle that 'only the fittest survive'- perhaps we are defective! A big part of me believes that the majority of people here are sensitive- empaths. I can't help but wonder if this world and the way it's going is better suited to narcissists, sociopaths and psychopaths.

That's an interesting thought. People who 'succeed' are often cold and ruthless, so yes, it would make sense that you see so many sensitive souls here. I think we're better beings cause we don't resort to harming others, just ourselves right. So in a better world, we would thrive and evolve. But in the current setup, we struggle and aren't really valued, so we start to loath ourselves and take ourselves out of the not so pretty picture they've painted. I don't think it'll ever really change. I'd rather be defective and have a heart myself, even if it means I suffer for a time. But yes, most animals only survive by showing no fear. Except cute one we adopt!
