  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

Have you any idea what its like to be told by doctors that you are either terminally ill, chronically sick with a disease that will eventually debilitate and kill you?. Have you any idea what its like to live with the depression of daily pain and sickness that is inadequately controlled. That normal living is just a distant memory?

Do YOU.??

Its so easy to sit behind your laptops, drinking coffee or whatever you do when you write these media stories.

But for the love of God, have consideration for those of us who are desperate seeking relief from pain, for those of us who are seeking assisted dying.

Put yourselves in our shoes and you will understand our pain.

END.

It really exposes the hypocrity of these journalists if you put it into the perspective from people suffering from chronic and incurable diseases. I've talked to people that suffer from chronic physical pain, daily. I've talked to people whose condition will only get worse over time until it completely removes any quality of life. I've talked to people that have an expiration date due to a terminal condition, which will lead to a slow and painful death. And I know so many people that suffer from incurable mental conditions that severely impact their lives. I'm one of them. All these people seek relief from suffering. This is very understandable if you have just a little bit of empathy left. Yet they're not allowed to die because their goverment has banned any type of assisted suicide that would allow them to find peace. That's the reality in the majority of countries on this planet. And even the countries that have legalized assisted suicide make it very difficult for us to use these resources and very often they're tied to instense financial costs, which essentially turns a peaceful death into a privilege, reserved for wealthy people. That means if you're suffering, you're left to suffer in most circumstances. That's why this community exists and it gives this platform legitimacy. And instead of covering the horrible conditions that many of us have to endure day to day, all the pain and misery we have to experience permanently, these journalists decided to smear the entire community. Is it really immoral to seek relief from pain if you're in such a miserable condition? These people would rather have us suffer an inevitable, slow and painful death than actually validate that people are allowed to die in peace. They would rather have options to exercise your right to die under dire circumstances removed to ensure we stay alive as long as possible despite our conditions. They don't care that we want to leave in dignity and peace. So yeah, you are right. This is basically just another example of a marginalized community getting wrecked for no reason by the media.

It's the "I did and so can you then" or "I know such and such a person who did it" mentality. This is a very narrow minded perspective as it doesn't take into account many factors such as one's life history, current situation, genetics, geographic location, socio economic status, et al. People so wrongly assume that what works for one person can work for everyone. As if life were so damn simple. This is what happens when actual intelligent analysis and empathy are replaced with group think. As I have stated to others and on this site numerous times, life is a complex set of circumstances unique to each individual and there is no "cure all" that works for everyone. But people will continue to push said narrative until it becomes them who faces an insurmountable situation. Such is the sad state of this oh so hypocritical society that has been built around all of us.

Sorry, I know I've already replied but I am so fired up!!! The NYT idiots that wrote the article are pathetic. They want to make a name for themselves. They have no life - at least none that they're happy with - they are so fucked up they believe the only way they can do anything with their life is to ruin other people's lives. I won't hate them because that would take too much of my energy. I feel sorry for them. At least I know my life is fucked up and I have NO intentions of hurting anyone else.

People can only comprehend what it is like if they have suffered in a similar way. It is cruel how the society denies the option of euthanasia. A right to die is very important, people should be able to leave peacefully on their own terms.

I love you @Rational man, you are spilling honest truths and facts as always.

These journalists have never walked a day in our shoes, how on earth could they know what the average SS member grapples with in their day to day life? To have such a revered, prestigious position at one of the world's best selling newspapers is an incredibly privledged spot to find oneself in.

Such jobs require you to be healthy, alert, well-socialised, and always on call to scoop out a new story or chase up an interview in a distant location. A disabled, chronically ill person could never thrive in such a profession, it is far too demanding. Likewise, a person with a severe mental illness would also probably find that environment unbearable and stressful.

These people are tone deaf, and so are many of the "mental health experts" they cite in their rag article. Want to place a bet on how many of those experts have dealt with a mental health crisis themselves? What about a tough financial situation? What about rapidly degrading health?

They would lose their lisences and their thrones in the ivory towers of academia for admitting weakness. This is why you have so many people speaking out about issues they have absolutely no experience with. To them, people like us are lines from a textbook, case reports and meta analyses, not real human beings who they can relate to and empathise with.

Before I developed chronic pain myself, I was incredibly ignorant as to what constant physical suffering entailed. As a child, I couldn't understand why my auntie didn't want to play with me, or rather, why she was not able to. I couldn't understand why sleep didn't make her feel better. It took viscerally experiencing a similar breed of agony myself for it to truly click for me.

A person whose biggest worry is what Starbucks flavor they're going to choose when they roll up to their swanky metropolitan office block is completely out of touch with what ails the average suicidal person. However, these are the voices who get heard in the media. Not ours.

Thank you for sharing your story. Im sorry to hear about your pain.

When my Mother died of cancer, I realised that there is no dignity or autonomy in dying. Doctors are ethically bound to save lives and they face a dilemma when they cant save the dying. I promised my soul that i would never die like my Mother. Unfortunately, I didn't expect this so soon in my life. I now face the same scenario but i would never betray my soul in the same way i would never abandon a true friend. In a sad way, i will have t o let go of this world through.assitited dying because i cannot go on with this pain indefinitely....PEACE.
