A New York City man who plunged 40 storeys from the rooftop of an apartment building has survived after crashing on to a parked car.

He landed in the backseat area of a Dodge Charger after crashing through the rear window.

'He came down feet first at like 100mph,' witness Andrew Petrocelli told the New York Daily News.

'Just when he's about to land, there was a boom and glass flying all over.'

When Magill hit the car, the impact caused his trainers to fly off his feet.

'The car saved his life,' Petrocelli said. 'He landed in there like a stunt man. It was amazing.'

so let discuss the science of this. 40 stories are at least 400 feet.
Usually when you survived you need something to break your fall on your way down before you land.

But this guy he did actually land, he just land inside a car, shatter the windows outside and fell inside (as you can see from the pic).

Amazing isn't it?

Poor bloke. He now faces a lifetime of medical bills he can't pay. For his sake,I hope he passes.
Unless I hear from his mouth he's thankful to be alive.
As for the science of it...sometimes,your number just isn't up.
ETA Wait, article is from 2010. Should be able to find out if he survived long term.
"Doing good and walking around"
He seems to have taken it in his stride. Fair dos.

Woaaah. Fuck. I guess since cars are designed to crumple it would make a good landing (to stay alive). But fuck now what state is he in does it say?
edit: I've heard of a few people falling out of effing planes into snow and live. It's amazing what a 'cushion' and the human body can do

They prove how they don't care.

"He wanted to jump off the building. He jumped. He lived. He has broken legs and who knows what else broken. He's probably going to appear on Dancing With The Stars, or maybe his own reality TV show. So now we all have to endure this guy creeping his way into our reality. We all would've been better off if he had not landed in that car."

At least the car owner himself saw it as a miracle, attributable to his rosary beads being in the car.
That's nice

No sympathy he jumped in a busy City during the day and didn't take anyone else's safety into consideration at least jumpers from bridges and cliffs don't endanger other people's lives, I agree it's our life we should have the right to end it but when you take innocent people with you, it's MURDER.

Cheers

Those people usually do it on impulse because they can't bear the pain anymore. They're usually the same folks who will tell you to "go kill yourself already" or "suicide is the easy way out, throw in the towel, you can easily just end your life, it's easy to kill yourself but hard to stick around, suicide is for cowards".

I've heard stories where people jumped out of planes, passed out on the way down, and survived because they were completely relaxed.

What seems to be overlooked in jumping conversations is that the advice is to aim to land on your head. Landing horizontal doesn't seem at all guaranteed to be fatal.

If jumping ever does become a viable method for me, I know of one corner of a car park in town. You could look down, see there are no vehicles, and hit the ground.

There have been a few people to survive jumping out of planes at thousands of feet. One of them landed in a freshly plowed field and it absorbed just enough to save them.

It's kinda amazing that something as simple as a bush, tree, or in this case a car can save you. This is why I've never considered jumping as a method.

You seem fascinated by jumping, especially stories where people survived falls from great heights. Looks like you've done some research.

Perhaps it would be useful if you could list the factors that increase your chances of survival, for the benefit of other members here?

Lack of height, landing in something soft enough to absorb impact, bad luck, medical intervention.

there is no secret sauce here

This is why I don't trust jumping. 40 stories that 400 feet, still too low I guess, this guy survived. Last thing I want is end up like this guy.

Read this story, it even more fascinating. This man is a pilot, fall from the aircarft, 15,000 feet. BAM straight to the ocean, he even swim to the life raft. Survived. They pull him out of the ocean 2.5 hours later, he survived.

[ Cliff Judkins who was in an F-8 Crusader jet fighter that caught fire over the Pacific Ocean during refueling. His ejection seat failed and he was forced to bail out manually (something that no one had ever done successfully from an F-8). Judkins leaped from the aircraft, but his parachute did not open. He hit the water and was pulled out alive about two and a half hours later. He returned to flying after a six-month hospital stay. ]
Rest of the read in that link above.

I mean seriously this man survied 15,000 feet fall BAM into the ocean, and even swim to the life raft. He won. Because I couldn't find any bridge in the world that 15,000 feet height.
Now I thought hit water at 15K feet is like concrete? I guess not the case with this guy, he hit a full ocean and able to swim to the life raft, lol.

How you explain this? Crash in a car you can say the car absorb the impact. But then you crash straight to the ocean flying down at 15,000 feet. What absorb your impact then?

The car window broke his fall, and he landed feet first. Landing feet first kind of protects the brain. What more science do you need to discuss?

This was about a decade ago. I think everybody on sanctionedsuicide has already heard about this story. At least you're posting real news (albeit news we've all heard) for a change. Rather than talking about people surviving walks down Hoover Dam.

Whenever I see a story about a parachute malfunctioning, I pretty much guarantee it didn't completely malfunction.

I was taught that a fall from the height of your own body - say a mere 5 or 6 feet - can be fatal. So unpredictable.

it depends how and where you land. For example hard tile floor or concrete on your head can be fatal.

He landed on a car that cushioned his fall, cars nowadays are designed to cushion impacts and crumple up etc.
