I deleted all forms of social media back in 2012. I was becoming more and more depressed and I couldn't figure out why. Finally I saw this quote that opened my eyes a bit...it said "social media leaves you comparing your behind-the-scenes to everyone else's highlight reel". I realized then that I needed to stop worrying about what other people were doing in their lives, and just focus on myself and trying to make positive changes; however small they may be.

Yes, and the PHONES dude, the fucking phones everywhere. Like just fuck off already, I hate it so much.
I'm clearly an old soul, who was probably much better suited for an era like the 50's.
A Dutch town has actually put LED strips in the ground at pedestrian crossing so mobile zombies can see when its safe to cross ! i often wish some sort of solar flare would hit the earth and render all electronics useless so i could just sit back and watch everyone panic and not know what to do

I still use google for good uses (learning), i only use facebook to chat with my cousins from the us (dont check the feed and dont upload anything) and i opened an instagram account to only follow national geographic (and i only open these apps once in a few months). The problem is not the tool its humans. Internet could be amazing if used right.
The new problem is that google, facebook and other social medias are now following us, theres no privacy now- 1990's paranoia films of the government are now paranoia fears of social media and google following us.

Humans (in general) are self-interested creatures by nature and always have been, it's just now the have the means to perfect themselves in the view of others. I wish the people who created social media cared more for the average person, they knew that it would become an addiction for many young users and still let them use fairly unregulated.
Since I quit social media's awhile back I feel a little less rubbish as I've stopped the constant comparison to others on there, which I hope more people decide to do in the future.

Nope, its not better. not even close to being better. its different, not better. Racism and sexism are still out there hangin upside down instead of being cut off and if i go against society's opinion or if i accidentally say the wrong comment-the walk of shame/execution will be brodcast to you live on social media.

immune is the key word.
at the first time i got high i came up with the most accurate sentence "Drugs are the illegal way of technology"- just like drugs your body get used really fast to how much it takes to thrill you and you push your limits more and more with no notice and what once thrilled you seems so prude/nothing to you now. It applies to many aspects in technology, society approvals and life, but as i said i dont want to write too much (cause i have to much to say).

Let's talk... I agree that the Rosling-esque perspective that the world is "getting better" results from a set of value biases. Like saying my community benefitting at the expense of multiple other communities is "progress" because I get to define the conditions of "progress." But these are super-unpopular perspectives that'll earn you the isolation-box for voicing...

Social media is gonna be the death of us as a society. People are already very addicted. It's not good for our health. Reminds me of this Ted Talk by the "father of virtual reality," Jaron Lanier. He's a techie but he's very much so against social media in the way that it's affecting us.

Thank you for sharing this TED talk. "We cannot have a society in which, if two people wish to communicate, the only way that can happen is if it's financed by a third person who wishes to manipulate them." (time 14:10)

Hahahaha good God. That's hilarious. What has this world come to...

I agree, quitting social media improved my mental health and restored my self confidence as well. It feels so much better to just not even partake in it, and let those self absorbed idiots burn themselves into the ground. Not to mention it saves an incredible amount of time as well.

That is so true, absolutely spot on. I love the saying that is similar to that, "Never compare your inside to someone else's outside."

I agree with you. When I see many of my peers and even college aged people (not that much younger than me, I'm 28 and they are around 18-22 or so) plaster themselves all over social media, it is just depressing. It is an additional factor in me wanting to ctb, I'll admit it. Also, those people just grandstand and virtue signal about social issues but really don't do shit about the status quo, are often judgy and cliquey. While I have many reasons and causes for wanting to ctb (although life is tolerable enough for me to want to stay a little longer for now), it is a significant factor that does push me towards the want to die spectrum. I generally try not to pay much attention or spend much time on social media, except maybe to hunt events and just to be a bit curious of what is going on, as I also feel that it is too depressing and way too artificial and superficial.

It's not just the social media anymore. People have changed. Social media is just one of the symptoms of a sick society.

I "love" this guy. He's so ... far from the typical person we see in front of a video-recorder. We need a LOT more atypical humans out there for all of us to see and hear to challenge the common views of what "right" or "good" people are.

Thank you for creating this post. I relate very much so.

I remember how much time my ex gf would spend on her phone to share pics and stories that hardly anybody cared about during our brief relationship when we could've just been enjoying honeymoon time.

And, the phones and wi-fi are sending/receiving very detrimental forms of energy that are very destructive to all life forms, irrespective of what data is being transmitted. It's a curse to have to engage with these devices in order to have a job, be a part of 'society'. It's like if you had to drink poisoned food and water to be able to live here, wait, we do.

I wanna exit so bad but my cat is keeping me here, for now, hopefully not for long. Was ready to exit in Dec until she adopted me. Her love is one of the few genuine things left in this fake world.

A great video I just found on this note: (It's called The Broken Century)

I agree, and online dating apps seem no different. I've barely tried with them but browsing the same superficial bs there it seems. Every girl with 4layers of makeup and a dog nose and ear filter can fuck off. I closed permanently my fb account now, don't see any need to have one.

Lol!!!!

Ughhhhh! Dial up in the 90s was such a pain. Either I could be on the computer, or my mom could be on the phone. Not both!

It really is. Makes me feel irrelevant like my time has passed. No value on the meat market. I might think it's all shit but if everyone else lives like this then it doesn't matter. I either try to measure up or go live on an island somewhere. I think the latters preferable. The internet has really ruined the world. No one has any integrity. They don't care about anyone just what they think of them and have traded their own principles for likes.
