Does anyone here struggle with Misophonia? It translates to "Hatred of Sound" - But that is putting it mildly.

I'm on the miso scale of 8/10 in severity and it is affecting my daily life all the time.
With Misophonia, I also deal with a tiny bit of misokinesia, the hatred of movement basically, so people fidgeting too much sets me off too, but not nearly as bad.

Trigger sounds send me into panic and rage, there's no in between, and I deal with people who don't understand that there's a huge difference between disliking something and a trigger, I keep being told to just ignore what I "don't like" but that's just not how a trigger works.

I also deal with people who think that exposure therapy is the way to cure everything, but the more I'm exposed to triggers, the more homicidal/suicidal I become.
The best I've done for myself my entire life is hiding in the bathroom or other places where I can avoid sound. I also use earbuds to blast my favorite music in my head, but with this comes people who think I'm rude for trying to stand being in the same room with people that I love. They just don't understand how life threatening Misophonia can be.

I tried joining a support group on Facebook, but instead of support, I just found a narcissistic admin and a bunch of whiners making petitions online to outlaw ordinary sounds that people make and other nonsense, I couldn't stand it so I left within a couple of months. I didn't want to associate with that crowd at all, it was so toxic.

If there's anyone else here, what do you do to get through the day? I find solitude and music to be the best thing in the world on my bad days.

Not as a blanket condition...it depends on the noise. I am fine with ambient city noise (not a horn honking city but just tire, tram etc sounds . I HATE grating things like beeping microwaves, lawn mowers, crickets chirping etc. I wear ear plugs in public if its loud. I cannot go to cinemas anymore as its SO loud it hurts even with earplugs. Shops playing loud music everywhere sucks now too. It's getting louder and more frustrating out there for sure. People say the rural areas are "quiet" but its a bunch of tractors, mowers, power tools etc and LOUD crickets all the time there as well.

Yeah hatred does not come close. Don't even know where to start telling what it is like.

It's not just sounds, either. Lights, motion, smells, texture, taste. I can obviously never say it normally, but also faces. A lot of faces bother me so much I cannot look. Never heard of the last one from anyone else, though.

I am sitting here imagining faces being a trigger, that must be incredibly difficult for you if you have to interact with someone, that's awful and crippling!

I have this as well. It has gotten worse for me as time goes by. I won't list my triggers because sometimes people adopt new ones when they hear of other peoples' triggers. Or so I've read!

Anyway, it's very hard to find a place to live where I'm not triggered - this is where I am most sensitive to noises. The panic feeling is no joke. And I can relate about the misokinesia - I have it mostly with people bouncing their leg, foot or chew gum like a cow.

This is just one of my many issues that has led me to this forum! I'm sorry to hear you suffer as well but you are not alone.

That Kiwi actress Melanie Lynskey struggles with misophonia.

I have bone growth behind one ear and sound can be excruciating, particularly bass. You too?

No, I don't. Not that I'm aware of anyway!
My Misophonia is purely a misfire in my brain so far.

Does it happen with all sounds Futility? The bone is easy to check. I can feel the increase behind my ear...runs in my family.

Well now I'm second guessing everything, I do have a rounded bump on both sides of my head, behind my ears, I think that's just my skull though, I'll have to compare to my boyfriend's head and see if mine feels strange when I have the chance.

It is usually only specific sounds, I can't tolerate mouth sounds at all, like eating, gulping drinks, smacking, gum chewing, crunchy snacks with mouth open, sucking soup/tea off a spoon, deep sighs after a sip of a drink etc.
The sound of children laughing, crying and screaming is another huge trigger, it can make me violent, unfortunately it's been proven.
Pen clicking, tongue clicking, foot tapping, singing/humming along with the car radio bothers me as well.
Anything overly repetitious does get to me even if it's not usually a trigger sound.
Certain sounds actually cause a strange pain too, I can't even explain it, I do have mild synesthesia as well, which could have something to do with it.
The synesthesia makes me hear certain colors as well as seeing geometrical shapes if I close my eyes and hear a sound.

I wish it would go away because I really don't intend to be such a bitch sometimes.

Bone growth is part of the skull, right behind the ear for our purposes. Loud bass hits my chest so hard I double over in pain. Feels like my bones are shattering...
Lol,,,it's ok Futility...I learned to move pretty quickly...kinda keeps me in shape...wink.

Well, I've compared my head to his and it seems quite normal to me, thanks for pointing that out though, that was interesting.

I also am affected by loud bass, it's not quite as bad as yours, but I do feel like someone is sitting on my chest or beating on it. It's no fun, jackasses driving around in their souped up cars really bug me because of this, and when they see I roll my window up, they turn it up, grr.
I would use ear plugs, but then I can hear my own body and I start to hyperfocus on my tinnitus instead, damned if I do, damned if I don't..

I'm sorry yours is so much worse than mine, I can only imagine what you're going through.

Ah well...I learned to use my voice to cover up the gritted teeth, and those who know me simply adjust the audio to bring the level down. If it is just too much noise bathroom comes in handy...close the door, keep the fan off and have a wee rest...used to take in books, and people refer to the washroom as my second home...but that's ok...less exhausting...shhhh....don't tell.

I do the same thing, sometimes I stay out there so long my BF barges in just to see if I'm okay, gee thanks, just trying to stay away from the noises you make.. *eye roll*
I can't stay mad at him though, I know he just cares.

One of the many reasons I believe I cannot replace my ex-partner is they rarely made noise. Quiet walker, quiet talker, excellent timber of voice, no stupid music, no snoring, no smacking/slurping.

There was this time that neighbours were blaring some unbearable party music, and we put on some Rammstein to drown it. Ah, the beauty of having the same needs.

Some of my rage is unreasonably misdirected to a friend. Yes, you have a partner that is all yours unlike what I put up with, but by whatever Gods you may believe in, if MY partner put on hiphop in the car, I swear I'd grab that wheel and kill us both. You are living in hell as far as I'm concerned.

I am very sensitive to loud sounds I can´t stand it e.g. people yelling, vehicles driving past my window, radio or noise will I talk to people
I have this too. I never realized there is a name for it. Well, it is just one more thing to add to my long list of problems.

Sometimes being able to label it feels better at least, it can make you feel kinda alien when you don't know if there's even a name for it or if anyone else feels like you do.
I found it by chance by simply typing my symptoms down, I think it was something like "extreme emotions caused by sounds" and "sound allergy" - it showed right up.

I did not mean to skip over your comment at all, I'm so sorry.

I have actually never adopted other people's triggers, I guess everyone is different, but I did read about that as well.
