This makes sense to me. I've never been depressed, my life was happy and I grew up well. It is an event that has made me suicidal, not a mental condition. A lot of people have reasons that make sense in the context of their own life to kill themselves, primarily external factors there is no way out of. It's not always mental illness.

For me it started out with a shitty life. Then it grew to a shittier life and so on till I got depressed from it.
Depression doesnt pop up without reason.

I don't suffer from classical depression. My depression was caused by my chronic pain mostly, and the fact that EVERYONE avoids me because of my Asperger's. If it weren't for those two conditions I would've died of old age, but living in pain and in total loneliness... no thank you. I don't want to live such life.

You don't need to be depressed to commit suicide... Some folks who commit suicide broke the law and were facing significant time behind bars. There are other non-depressed reasons for committing suicide.

I think this can also break the automatic reasoning in a lot of people that goes: suicidal = sad = depression
Not denying that this isn't common, but people can wish and chose to end their lives for many different reasons, and many other conditions that can be mental or physical or comorbid. And all of them can occur without a diagnostic of major depressive disorder or a positive symptom of depression in another disorder.

Damn. What were these one time events? (if you don't mind sharing something about them)

Didn't these events make you depressed / therefore suicidal?

Violent gang rape.

It gave me severe PTSD, traumatic mutism and a period of catatonia, but I would be suicidal even without those things. The resulting conditions are also a rational response to the event rather than a chemical imbalance in terms of how mental illness traditionally presents. Besides that, it destroyed every part of who I was and completely erased my self-concept.
