I'm trying to see if other folks who want to (or have a history of wanting to) ctb feel they have suffered lasting damage from ECT. Not everyone experiences adverse effects (and some have been helped), but I have a theory that if it's used for anything other than endemic severe depression whether there might be more damage longer term.

Secondarily I'm also wanting to hear from or connect with anyone who got ECT after being on a 3-day hold. In my case, they signed me off of my hold so I could consent to ECT, which shouldn't be legal…I was in no place mentally to be agreeing to something that major and my depression was the result of a massive recent trauma.

Honestly, these stories just disgust me. I haven't had ECT but I was given mania and psychosis inducing medication for 16 years and was put in involuntary treatment for a year due to their side effects. They have had lasting effects for me cognitively. I agree with you about ECT and I am so sorry this happened to you.

I know this thread is a bit dated, but I'm still recovering from the side effects of my 10-month long journey with ECT. My memory and cognitive function are a bit obscured but not enough to be considered disabled. It's been about 6 months since my last treatment.

Thank you. I'm sorry you're still experiencing issues. Did you get ECT as a last-ditch treatment? Also, did they tell you about the possibility of Ling-term effects?

It helped my depression and other symptoms. But the tradeoff wasn't fair for me. You aren't guaranteed to get memory loss/impairments, I was just one of the unlucky ones. I did 24 treatments in total.

Thank you for your answer. I'm really sorry it did not turn out good for you...
I was asking cause it may be an option to me. Months ago I was just asking for this treatment ! Now I just don't know anymore... I'd rather CTB but as I seem unable to do it (been trying for months) I'm thinking maybe I should try ECT. Nothing more to loose. I don't know.

Honestly, I say do it if you want to. I'm not anti-ECT even after my bad experience because it definitely helped me and a lot of others. I would have CTB sooner had it not been for ECT. The nurses that took care of me were the nicest and most empathetic I have ever encountered. My brain still needs time to recover so there's no telling if I'm going to stay this way forever as it's only been 5-6 months since my last treatment.
Feel free to PM me if you have any questions!
