hi! I recently bought a 9mm x 15m (or 50ft) rope, from looks it seems like polyester or some kind of synthetic material though I know manilla/hemp is best for a long drop. it's a general utility rope for hunting and military but unfortunately not for climbing.

do you think it'll hold my bodyweight enough to ctb cleanly, quickly and effectively? (for reference I am 49kg/108lbs coming out of a hard slog from an eating disorder) another issue is finding the right knot that will not come undone after considerable strain, any help would be greatly appreciated

*I'm highlighting the details because I myself can be a lazy reader at times and only really skim what's important, I hope it helps in some regard.

to anyone still reading, my DMs are always open if you just need someone to chat, for the time being. thank you.

Tbh, I'm a little sceptical about that rope. It sounds a bit like paracord or similar, not professional climbing accessory cord. You can probably hang yourself with it but without knowing it's load limits/quality it's hard to assess if it would withhold a long drop. Not sure if I did the math right, but your weight and drop height equals around 375kg (?). Despite you being a lightweight, that's still a lot of momentum on any anchor/rope. Also, any knot you tie into a static rope will halve it's carrying capacity and I think that includes the noose. Agree with the others on recommending a thicker rope. I bought 1cm hemp rope and I believe slip knot is best

Don't know how strong hemp is thinking about mountaineering rope?

So you need more than 3 metres of drop to ensure a broken neck I hope the rope will stand the force

That should work if the rope doesn't break. I would use a 12mm rope

9mm and a 10+m drop?
Decent chance it'll decapitate you.
Long drop ropes are 25mm in diameter, and the length of the drop depends on your weight.
Lookup the 'official table of drops' on wikipedia. It'll tell you all you need to know.
Also, you do not want a climbing rope: they stretch and slow down.

I looked at this thread a few times and I didn't want to say anything but I can't do that. You do not want to do the long drop. That is not one you want to choose. I don't know what you should choose but I know the long drop is what you don't want to choose. Maybe keep looking. Long drop is going to hurt real bad. Maybe read up on it more. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think it's a good idea.

The problemen without long drop hanging is tha t your head is still conscious for a *few* seconds.

you've only really told me it's a bad idea without actually giving me any reasons why.

if calculated correctly with the right rope the long drop is extremely effective. you're more than welcome to give me a better suggestion.

For long drop you use, a thicker rope as at partial or full suspension. Otherwise the rope would cut deep into your neck instead if breaking it or it could snap cause of the big sudden force

It also depends a bit on your weight

it says on specifications it's made of polyester, but it is slightly thicker (12mm as opposed to 9mm) and the breaking strength is 2400kg, which is good news considering I probably wouldn't gather that much force from a long drop.

Verloren if you are under 55kg it will work.

regularjanedoe: this looks OK, but 10m is not much for a longdrop. You now you have to fix it good to a very good anchor point and the noose itself also needs a bit of rope. And cause you are so slim you need a longer drop than others. I'd say better try to get 20m
