  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

Falling sounds so nice to me. To feel like I'm flying as I leave the world. But I'm not sure if jumping off an overpass above a highway will do the job. Will it?

It depends on the height, but I highly doubt it (No pun intended). I think what will happen is that one will fall, get hurt and then get ran over if there is traffic below. Not a pretty way to go, if you ask me.

Good luck.

The height will be the average height of most overpasses that gets posted on the green signs above. So like, I'm guessing 20 feet high? You think that's enough if I fall on concrete

I'm not going to directly reply to this, but will encourage you to search on the internet about the how long can the average human fall. It should solve your question.

I would caution against jumping from overpasses no matter the height. You could cause a car accident, or you could survive the fall only to be run over (which seems like a very painful end imo.)

This is exactly what I was thinking. Please if you CTB try not to get anyone else get hurt during the process.

I read about a driver who was killed by jumper going thru windshield so not a good idea.

You'll be badly injured but it is very unlikely to kill you. The body is surprisingly resilient.

Even if no one gets directly hurt you're gonna scar some people mentally too. No one should have to deal with that.

Please don't do this method. It is a cruel thing to do to the sad person who will run his car into you.

I dislike this line of reasoning, because it completely fails to address the point that suicide methods such as these are usually chosen for lack of other methods. Do not blame the suicide who was forced to resort to such cruel methods as these, but pro-life advocates and the socially established pro-life thinking that prevent assisted suicide, or at the very least access to better methods.

If it is so important for society that people don't traumatise others with their suicide attempts, why isn't assisted suicide available and many good methods are severely restricted or downright forbidden? As long as good methods are hard to come by, people will have to resort to crude methods that might traumatise others. By the way, if train drivers are so traumatised by jumpers, why have I never seen them advocate assisted suicide?
By restricting suicide methods, society has made the choice for these people. As Lessing so aptly put it: "Wahl setzt Menge voraus." Therefore, if you want to talk about individual choices, these people have to have a choice in the first place. Nobody jumps in front of trains or cars because it is his dream method.

I feel obliged to add that I don't want to encourage anyone to use this method. I merely disapprove of this particular line of reasoning as there are far better ones, e.g. it is a very difficult method because of its high SI threshold and it has a high rate of failure, and should consequently not be recommended to anyone. It is distressing that some people find themselves in a situation where they would even consider this method.

I know from memory that a number of people in Melbourne survived jumping off a bridge of 190 ft into the Yarra River below. As for 20 ft, even onto concrete... well, no.

I've considered the thought before.

A few concerns.

1. Amount of pain and overcoming the fear.
2. Landing on a car and injuring the driver.
3. Traumatizing one or more people that would hit you with their vehicles.
4. Drivers being blamed for running you over if it isn't apparent that you jumped.
5. The amount of traffic and closing a highway.
6. The safety of emergency crews at that scene.

There are way better and safer methods that don't involve the possibility of hurting/killing others.
