Thank you, I'm still here. I'm very ashamed to say it but the 'test' scared me and I have not yet planned when my next attempt will be because of this. I may try to order N before attempting this method again. To people considering it, it was definitely not unbearable, and it was extremely easy to execute - I just need to be reminded of why I made these plans in the first place, by going through day to day life again for a while.
typx, Lisa and VanHeineken, I have added a few links that I used as information at the end of this post. Firstly here's what I did. I also just want to add a caveat that I am not intending this as advice, and I am by no means an expert on partial suspension hanging. I am simply explaining what I did personally, although it did seem to work well.
My Method
Knots
Around the neck: Slip knot, aka Simple noose (
How To Video)
Attached to support: Also a slip knot, with the first loop in the video going around the support. I couldn't find any videos to show what I mean but if you just try that same knot around a pole, it should be very easy.
Pull down on the rope in between the two knots to ensure that the support knot tightens, it should feel very secure.
Type and Thickness of Rope: Personally I used 10mm polypropylene rope as it was the thickest rope in the shop. I think I have read somewhere advising thicker rope, or to use hemp rope for better strength. Maybe they meant it for drop hanging but the rope I used seemed strong enough to me. Research this more yourself but I'm sure people have successfully hung themselves with much weaker materials.
Padding: I cut out material from a soft jumper (I think Americans call it a sweater) to use as padding for comfort. I tightened the knot around my neck and marked where I would place the padding on the rope. I cut the correct length of material needed and enough width to wrap material around the rope a few times. I attached the padding to the rope with sellotape (scotch tape) at 4 locations. Makeshift I know, but it was good enough.
I want to emphasise that this increased comfort immensely by reducing friction, pinching and generally making the rope feel softer.
Kneeling position: This is a probably a little hard for you to visualise but my feet were touching the floor and I leant my weight downwards by bending my knees. I noticed that when I was hesitant or didn't lean all my weight it did not work well at all. It seemed like I needed to really commit to it and force as much of my weight down as possible. This made me go light headed very quickly.
Position of knots: Standing up, the knot around the neck was roughly at stomach level. The support bar was at eye level.
Support: For me my wardrobe has a very sturdy metal clothes rail which I used as support.
