Its a nylon rope, and I'm fucking nervous as hell. I hope I can sneak it in without my dad or brother noticing.

Idk if my Ethernet cable would do, but to test the strength of it, I tied it to a beam in the cupboard and used by body weightto pull on it... it held... slightly scary that if I am in the mood to CTB, I could theoretically do it (tho somehow doubt I would CTB)

Nylon rope will stretch when you put weight on it. (I know that from my mountaineering days. The stretch was good in those situations, because it meant that if you fell you came to a more gentle stop.) It might be a good idea to do some tests, to see just how much it stretches, before you use it for anything serious.

Now you need to learn how to tie a knot or two. A slip knot is easy and effective. A noose knot is more elegant but no more effective for suspension hanging. It may be better for drop, I just don't know.

You may want to learn and practice on maybe a shoestring or Paracord that way if you get caught you won't lose your rope.

Are you planning full or partial hanging?

Feel free to hit me up if you have any questions

I'm gonna do partial.
I'm gonna do partial.
though it doesn't really matter, but i'm leaning towards partial

I was wondering if the stretch will make a difference but with partial it will not be an issue.

I'm sure you'll feel some comfort having your method in hand and just knowing it's there.

Just try and act normally. Is it being delivered to home or to a locker? If a locker can you collect it then leave it outside at home somewhere until you know Dad and bro won't see you take it inside?

Good luck and keep us posted.

Is a Slipknot okay for full suspension?

I'm not expert on hanging as it's not my method but I do recall reading that the hangman's noose isn't ideal for CTB as it's a drop knot to break the neck.

A slip knot is free running and exceptionally easy to tie.

How much does nylon stretch? If you have experience, I'm really interested in this.

What I find is that climbing ropes are categorised as either static, semi-static, or dynamic. What's interesting is that the static ones have really low stretch by specification (e.g. 5% or less), yet they are still often made of nylon. I wonder why this is, since nylon is said to be stretchy. It leads me to believe that the rope's structure and quality are probably more important than the exact material itself. When browsing ropes online, I find that the rope's material is often not a good indicator of its exact characteristics (e.g. load capacity, or elasticity).

Based on my research, nylon can stretch about 15-25% under normal load. While this is not ideal, it doesn't sound too bad to me. How long is the load-bearing part of a typical setup? Maybe 1 meter? That's a 25 cm stretch at most, which doesn't sound too bad. And that's only the worst case – in reality, it'll most likely be less. In a mountaineering scenario, the stretch plays a role when there is a fall and the rope has to absorb the shock. However, the forces are orders of magnitude higher during a fall compared to what we use the rope for. Also, in climbing, much more rope is typically in use, so a 15–25% stretch results in a much greater length change.

If you (or anyone) have anything to add, or I'm misunderstanding something, I'd like to hear your opinion.

A slip knot is easy and effective. A noose knot is more elegant but no more effective for suspension hanging. It may be better for drop, I just don't know.

I think you're confusing the Slip Knot, the Noose Knot, and the Hangman's Noose (or Hangman's Knot). These are all different.

For suspension hanging, the Noose Knot is the one to use.

What's confusing is that the Noose Knot and the Slip Knot are essentially the same knots, and the only difference is which end is which and the direction in which the knot is tied. But it's an important difference, because confusing the two can result in the person tying the wrong knot. For example, someone might tie a Slip Knot, put a stopper knot on the sliding end, and end up with a fixed loop instead of a noose.

I think this confusion is so common that I feel like I'm banging my head against the wall by typing these kinds of comments. Yet, I can't resist, because I believe a lot of confusion can be avoided by being clear with the terminology.
