Can you still die if only the jugular is compressed and not the carotids?

No. The jugular vein delivers deoxygenated blood from the brain to the heart. The carotid artery delivers oxygenated blood to the brain.
If the brain doesn´t get enough oxygen, it dies and subsequently all organs, including the heart. The heart stops beating.

Yes, compressing exclusively the jugulars kills, too. Eventually the head is so full of blood that the arteries cannot push in more oxygenated blood. Reports say it feels unbearably terrible, like your head was exploding, plus it takes much longer to lose consciousness.

Eventually .... plus it takes much longer to lose consciousness.
But the OP wants to die, not just become unconscious.

When I tightened the ligature around my throat it cut off my breathing. I could only take in a very small amount of air and my breathing was very shallow. Can you die this way or does your airway need to be completely blocked? Do i need to tighten the ligature more?

Do I need to move the ligature to a different place? Higher up on neck?

Of course yes, the high pressure blood flows from the heart via the carotid arteries to the brain. The pressure is necessary to press the blood through the brain vessels, or with other words there is a pressure loss on the blood´s travel through the brain. The same blood leaved the brain via the jugular vain and runs now low pressure beck to the heart. It is one cycle, and it doesn´t matter were you break this cycle. If you block only the vain your head will feel like exploding.

@NeverEndingPain as long as the jugular veins stayed compressed you'd surely CTB, however you'd need to devise a method where it remains compressed as once you loose consciousness, you won't be able to manually keep tension around them. Kinda like holding your breath, you can only hold it so long until your body forces you to breathe.

Do you have a homemade tourniquet or did you buy one ? I still don´t agree with the other users, especially if you want a quick death as peaceful as possible.

This photo shows the carotid artery:

The tourniquet must be placed over the larynx just below the chin. This way you should actually be able to breathe.

Jup, this is what happens when you make it a poll. I suspect you do not care what "the people think" about this. If you want actual information, I suggest the resources pinned on top of this forum.

No, you cannot die this way. I hope you do not need to suffer this way, either.
You might be able to kill yourself by blocking your airway completely. The resources do not suggest to do this.

Do I need to move the ligature to a different place? Higher up on neck?
Again, many many guides on hanging around. Even wikipedia has them, if you look carefully.

To clarify once again. The carotid method does not mean blocking breathing, but blocking the carotid artery.

I have looked and always find conflicting information in the comments that make me unsure. I just don't want another failed attempt. I do care what people say. I just wish it was either a yes or a no and not both answers. Sorry :(

Maybe these photos explain it better:

1660032560862

1660032616972

The carotid artery is deaper inside. The jugular vein (internal and external) is further out and partly covers the carotid artery. This means that you need more pressure to compress not only the jugular vein, but also the carotid artery.

If the tourniquet is placed directly under the chin, there should be no breathing problems.

Thank you for the information. It did help me understand better.
