Slavoj Zizek mentioned a very weird bible quote in his newest text.

Luke 14:26 ESV
"If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple."

If we hate our lives, does this mean Jesus loves us? Okay enough blasphemy for today. I read this quote is often misunderstood. The original word for "hate" had a different meaning to that time. It should emphasize a huge difference in the love for God and the love for loved ones. The love for God must really be extreme compared to literally everything else.

"Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life" John 12:25

"Anyone who loves their father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of me" Matthew 10:37

it's meant to say anyone who loves their life enough to choose it or their family over Jesus cannot be his disciple because he demands total devotion. hate is used in the context of 'choosing,' apparently. wack ass jesus.

If pronounced today, Jesus would have been called a cult leader.

The word "hate" here is the Greek μισεῖ (misei). My understanding is that it doesn't mean hate like despise. It is hyperbole. The verse is talking about putting God first in your life. It is just a rhetorical device. Jesus also said to love your neighbor and to honor your father and mother.

That's what I absolutely love about the Bible. Everybody can make it to say whatever the fuck they want it to and can quote a half dozen scriptures pointing out why THEY are right and no one else knows what the fuck they are talking about. It really is a LOVELY book ...

Sorry- this is going to be bashing religion. Those who might take offence at that- please ignore...

It just seems so bizarre to me. It sounds like an intention or at least an awareness that we should/ can be dissatisfied in life.

So effectively saying- as the creator of your world, I know you will be dissatisfied and suffer here but- I still want you to love and worship me.

If I went to a theme park where the characters there abused me. Where the rides failed and injured me. I wouldn't be sending fan mail to the park creator!

It also seems to reinforce this idea that we will receive rewards for suffering. Why is pain so celebrated in religion? Why is it considered so admiarble to suffer and accept it with grace? Because God presumably knows we will suffer? Because they designed it that way. And they don't want to hear complaints the whole time?

I don't get it. Imagine a human relationship like that. Where one person abuses the other terribly but expects them to still be loyal. Wouldn't we call it abusive and coervive in that case? Religion feels terribly coercive to me.

Absolutely agree, 100%. And if I may go on a little rant... In fact, the Greatest commandment is Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart soul and mind. The Second is to love thy neighbor as thyself. ALL the law hangs on these 2. Thus, if one has Jesus; they don't need to be concerned with "rituals" and "laws". His Holy Spirit will guide the person. As a side note: this is why it's not "religion". It's having a Relationship. We can't "work" our way to God; and we can't "lack of sin" our way out of hell. It's all about what HE did; by paying the price when He went there. "Unless a man be Born-Again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God". (John 3:3 and 3:16). It's so simple, yet so profound.

You're absolutely correct. God never intended for us to make the Bible our idol. This is why I do not attend Church any more. I can't stand the theological apostasy and the Bible worship. I just rely on Jesus' Holy Spirit. For THAT is the true "Word of God". In my most humble opinion.
