Scenario: Today I called the police to do a wellness check on my neighbour. He's mostly a shut in, gets everything delivered, and though we chat occasionally in the stairwell, or when we take parcels in for each other, our contact is fairly limited. However he'd spend most of his time gaming online and he had a tendency to scream profanities when being attacked in battle so I'd hear him fairly regularly.
I hadn't heard him in several weeks. No answer at his door. So I called the police to check on him.
He's dead. Possibly been dead for in excess of 6 weeks.
From what I know of him, he had no friends or family. Nobody to care or check on him. I have no idea if he killed himself or died of natural causes. If I hadn't called, who knows how long before anyone noticed.
When the police broke down the door, the smell immediately started to permeate the building. I can't explain it but it's like nothing I have smelt before. Attending officers threw up. Since they then had people in and out for the next 4 hours, the smell has even seeped into my flat (apartment). When they moved the body it got even worse. I dread to think what he looked like and the biohazard in his flat but I googled enough about body decomposition process to give me nightmares.
Anyway, I'm also very isolated in terms of engagement with humans. Right now, if I did CTB, which given my social anxiety would likely be at home, work would raise the flag if I was missing for a few days, I guess. But if I leave work or end up on longterm sick, nobody would raise the flag for weeks. When my mum passes, months even.
For those of you who are equally isolated, do you have a plan to ensure your body being found within a certain window of time or do you not care?
