  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

In addition to our public response, we are currently seeking legal representation to ensure the best possible defense in this matter. If you are a lawyer or know of one who may be able to assist, please contact us at [email protected].

what is important to be mindful of is the fact that a lot of these easily-accessible sites are going to misrepresent the numbers in order to deter people from doing this.

"(...) it is typically lethal, even though the literature reports cases of survival with levels >90%." as noted by Barranco et. al in a medical journal. by 'levels', the author is speaking to the progression of methemoglobinemia, which is brought on by sn ingestion

Sodium nitrate is nowhere near as lethal as sodium nitrite. The impression from posts here is tht the success rate for sodium nitrite is much higher, but no one knows for sure at this point. This is a scary post though.

Do your homework and it all goes to plan. Thankfully most do so not hiccups. I feel for those that have treated it like candy/sherbert though 🙏🏻

As with all things always read and follow your prescription, follow directions and any plan can come to fruition! :)

One number that can't be accurate is that they can't include people who take sn, vomit, and then don't call 911- some people have reported here that there were very sick for a few days and recovered and never called 911- at least one person recently reported some significant damage from their failed attempt though. So this 88% going to the hospital is of cases where someone called 911. The 15% could also be a percent of people for whom 911 was called- this may not include people who ctb'd by sn and no one called 911 until they were gone- these cases may or may not be included.

"Reports show that nearly 15 percent of nitrites and nitrates self-poisoning cases have ended in death since 2018."

Do you believe that number is accurate? Why or why not?
Isn't that the only ones reported to poison control?

I've read a couple other articles which is relevant. It says along lines of someone taking 750mg is SN. This is far below the lethal dose but is still reported as a self poisoning case (person survived). Something to consider.

It does not say how or why the 88% came about. Eg, underdosage, phoning hosp, caught. I feel that provided you follow guide to letter, you'd be the 15%.

Yup.
It also includes all the suicidal gestures, i.e. people who are not following protocol and just take a sip or two.
As well as everyone who calls for help after taking SN.

IMO a 15% rate of completion is quite high.
Especially considering that 88% require (and receive) medical intervention but it's unsuccessful in about 1 in 5 cases.

I think that it's accurate. This number includes all reported cases of intentional SN poisoning regardless of the amount they took. 88 percent of people's condition was so serious that they needed to be hospitalized. 15 percent of people who were treated with methylene blue still died. It shows just how lethal a poison it is.

I'll say again, that sure isn't confidence inducing. Not to me it isn't.
It's not, bt if you consider where the stats come from it may help- this is likely the % of people who ctb'd after they or someone else called poison control while they were still alove- so this tells us little or nothing about what per cent of people ctb who attempt to ctb by sn, since it is pretty well known that if you call 911 while they are still alive they will get the antidote pretty quickly and wiwll most likely be saved.

That makes sense. Still, it's not enough info to correlate into some kind of meaningful statistics, but I guess one can be fairly certain that the real percentage of success is much higher than just 15%.

15% the antidote is not working or given too late, the antidote is not perfect either.
