  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

Protesting the conditions of an inhumane world

Hello,

I've recently been reading more on Thich Quang Duc, the Vietnamese monk who burned himself alive in protest of the religious persecution of Buddhists in his country. He allegedly didn't scream or move at all while he was burning, and was able to maintain the same position without moving. I would like to do the same thing to protest other things that make my life miserable. Does anyone know if there are any painkillers that can reduce the pain of being burned before it happens?

Absolutely nothing would help ease the pain other than being almost dead before you self immolated. Also your protest would be probably be forgotten in a short time by most people and wouldn't be likely to change things permanently. Maybe composing an email with all your thoughts and sending it out to the relevant people would be just as hard hitting without the torture to you. I do feel for you and really don't mean to be harsh but it's a horrific method to consider just to make a point to other people. Please be kinder to yourself. Wishing you the very best whatever you decide.

I appreciate your concern, but unless I can think of a better way to kill myself and get publicity I'm sticking with burning. Perhaps, if I'm really ambitious, I can contact some news outlets about it. It's a lot to think about, but I'm nowhere near actually doing it yet.

Thich Quang Duc is an inspiration. But we have to see he had a profound level of mastery over his body and mind—probably truly detached in the highest sense of the word. Not fully identified w pain at all. Also, he did not act in despair.

I'm really sorry things are so desperate for you. It's your choice of course. At least you have time to think about it.
