Discussion Is the end of the World near?

Nobody seems to talk about the plastic pollution and how microplastic is everywhere, we're eating it and it's bad for our health. And the plastic pollution is not coming to an end anytime soon, it's terrifying when you think about it.

Plus the climate change, poverty, wars, overpopulation - there may be more literal space for people but the planet is not likely to sustain such numbers - the amount of plastic and other garbage alone right now speaks volumes!

What do you think guys? Is the end of the world finally nearing? Will humans go extinct naturally or transform in some new transhumanist form of existence? Or is the planet itself doomed?

I think society will collapse, just not sure if it'll happen in our lifespan (ctb aside).

Look I agree that there are lot of issues in this world, but I think you are underestimating this uncanny ability that humans as a species have to solve and overcome problems when these problems start really threatening our survival and continued existence.

I mean everybody thought polio would wipe us out but one of the humans developed a vaccine for it, or the times when the black plague was a major threat to humans continued existence, but we overcame that. Time and again, humans have risen to the occasion when extinction was at stake, so there is no reason not to believe that humans as a species can rise to the occasion again if we ever face extinction

I think the world has a while left to go, but I feel it's definitely going to get harder and harder for people to survive and be able to pay for the things they need. The world is so populated and it's hard to make it so every person is living a good life, it's sad that so many people have to suffer horrible things everyday. As far as climate change and pollution go, I hope more laws can be passed to make wasteful products be more environmentally friendly. For example where I live all the grocery bags In major stores are made from recycled material, you have to pay 6 cents for each bag but I think it's worth it to get like 20 bags for $1.20 and just bring them in with you everytime (they're reusable and sturdy). My parents complain about this, and it frustrates me a lot, I think it's so worth it to pay a tiny bit of money not to have as much plastic bags polluting the environment and impacting animals. I hope more places do this, and also that every house/apartment/other housing is required to have a recycling bin outside just like they're required to have a trash bin. I feel so frustrated having to throw away cardboard because there's no recycling here and I don't have a car to drive to a recycling place. One of the things I love about Japan is how considerate of littering they are, in the US it's very rare to go down a street and not see any trash, it's crazy. The littering and pollution problem can be really bad here in some parts, I don't understand why people can't just keep their trash until they reach a trash can

The world sure looks much more shit now, considering the current events and stuff, it kind of unsettles me and just makes me wanna die even more. But I hope that we are not there yet, yes, I want to die, but I would much rather end my life on my own terms. I don't wanna die during a world or nuclear war or some sort of global societal collapse, idk why, but that's just how I feel.

I recently listened to a fantastic podcast about this called the end of the world with Josh Clark. I don't think I ever fully realized just how many ways the world could end at literally any moment. It's unlikely, but entirely possible, and it seems a lot more possible when I think about how unlikely yet inevitable it is for humans to have come into existence in the first place. I don't really know how to feel about it
