To add a bit more to the discussion: when I was 13 I attempted suicide with an overdose of Tylenol (actually Excedrin PMs).

I never lost consciousness but had my stomach pumped in the hospital. And after I was attended to, lying in the hospital bed with a tube down my nose and charcoal being pumped into my stomach my Mother comes over to the bed...the very first thing she said to me was "how could you do this to ME?", through clenched teeth with a disgusted expression.

I will never forget the episode of the Sopranos when Tony discovers AJ in the pool during his suicide attempt and how he reacted—with utter caring and sadness for his son. A mobster had more compassion than my Mom which is rather striking as I think about it.

Any parent who reacts to a child's suicide with abuse is partly to blame for the suicide attempt imo.

textbook narcissism from your mom

Good post. I did this for years. I'm done.

No longer "pulling myself up by my bootstraps"—my boots are worn out. And those straps are nonexistent.
Yes, but presumably your socks are underneath. Pull those up. Why are you being so immature?

In addition to the great responses here, I would also add that suicide is often seen as something unrealistic and fanciful. People regularly assume it's just something others verbally throw out on impulse. It's never seen as a viable option, even though it's sometimes the only one that makes sense.

It is just sad how people will say suicide immature.
Instead of even trying to help the people who are suffering, guilt tripping someone else is something someone rather want to do

If the top of society was the epitome of humility, respect and honor than it might matter what other's thought.

The truth is it's often the worst aspects of humanity that rises to the top.

Is suicide 'whatever insult', idk, perhaps but I couldn't care less.

It's not. That's a response from someone who doesn't know how to handle taboo topics which is a sign of immaturity.

I myself consider suicide as a sign of weakness. Nature only seeks the strong to maintain life.

What I am about to say is not meant to offend you or others..

Sometimes the weak manage to pass on their genes but predators and the environment will catch up to them sooner or later. The strong sense weakness.

No, I don't think it is immature. It takes tremendous courage and thought to be able to execute and succeed in suicide.

Not immature if it's meant, to use it as a lever is perhaps cruel and I'm not saying that's what you did at all.
Also for a parent to be so dismissive is absurd, as was mentioned before, compassion, concern,
Worry, fear, understanding and desperation would all be what he should be thinking before coming out with immature.

My son took his life in July this year and I had no idea that's what he was thinking although now I know it had been on his mind for a long time (he left a note).

I have no idea if me knowing would of had any impact on the out come, however I would give anything and I mean anything to have a chance to turn back time be able to talk to him before he did it, I think I understand suicide, sometimes it's on my own mind to do it but to my daughter and my wife I have a responsibility and therefore could not do it whilst they are here, if they were gone then I'd be at the bus stop for sure.

Suicide is scary, serious and so final so should never be dismissed so easily by anyone who has the privilege to be included in your intentions or thoughts because you matter as do your plans and emotions.
He will probably live to regret dismissing you as immature as you don't come to this site unless you're halfway serious about ending your life.
Good luck I hope you survive but understand that you may not.

I think it *can* be immature depending on the person and the intent. To me, if it's meant to (solely) punish someone else, or to send a message, then it's immature (I know that political acts are in this camp - I'm torn about that). A mature action would be in confronting what is going on with other people. For someone who has made a cautious decision and weighed carefully their options and quality of life, it is anything but immature. I also think it can be carried out in a mature or immature way. For instance, I knew someone who got in a fight with her husband. She went to work and when she came home he'd done it with a rifle so it was the first thing she saw - almost no head. And he let the dogs in the house before he did it (which they were never in during the day). So they were...you know...anyway I guess it was horribly awful. To me, that's immature. And selfish. Context always matters.

The act of not understanding or even attempting to understand how someone is feeling and what they're going through is immature. I'm sorry but I really hate people who respond in such a negative way.

Just like being told that it's immature, I've also been told that I'm seeking attention, I'm selfish and that since I'm suicidal it means I don't see value in the relationships with the people around me so with that, I shouldn't have relationships with people. After that last comment, I never wanted to lose my shit as much as I did in that moment.
Yet it's such common thinking. Not deserving? Zero humanity
