Many years ago suicide by car exhaust (or carbon monoxide) was very popular - presumably because it was relatively easy to do. All you had to do was connect a hose to the exhaust, run into the car via a window and just lie down and go to sleep. I know of a couple of people who died in this (supposedly) relatively painless way.

But I hardly hear about 'suicide by car exhaust' anymore, and people now seem to prefer to die by hanging or firearms.

I was recently told that car manufactures were required to reduce carbon monoxide emissions for this very reason: to make it difficult for people to use their own cars to die by suicide.

Is this true? Is it still possible, though, to die in this way regardless? I mean, cars still emit carbon monoxide so I assume that it just takes a lot longer.

CO charcoal method would be faster.

No. Newer cars have catalytic convertors that capture most of the pollutants formed by internal combustion engines, including CO. Older cars, much older, could theoretically still be used, but there are better ways to "create" CO.

The big car companies hardly researched and developed catalytic converters, fuel efficiency and better combustion for people not to ctb with their vehicles. It's a result of reducing pollution and co2 footprint by legislation of stricter and stricter rules which forced them to adapt, not being able to ctb is only an added side effect.

During the time this method was utilized, seeking information on how to ctb was not as easy as it's today. People make do with what they knew what worked and it indeed worked during those time. There are better ways to achieve higher CO levels but cars what were most convenient to use.

You could of course buy a classic 60's car to recreate this method, but with newer car they're are just to efficient without serious modifications.
