  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

I got the same message as well. Everyone did. @RainAndSadness is there a way for people who aren't US citizens to help? I think everyone should, if it's possible, help this website out. It's really the least we can do. Especially considering how hard @RainAndSadness ,@Dot, @Anxieyote and many of the other moderates and admin work just so people can have a choice on how their lives end or continue.

I don't think every is lost. But I don't think the best case option will happen if no one makes an effort.

Yeah, I saw that, too! I'd like this place to stay, since the pro-life forums don't do much for me. They don't seem to understand how much people here are suffering—or they think that a long stint in a psych ward will get rid of all suicidal ideation, which is a bit of a joke, since being held against your will isn't exactly good for your quality of life.

This is the only place I come to that helps keep me going. It is of great benefit to communicate with like-minded people who are also suffering from mental illness, and existential crisis in general. Pro-life toxic positivity, political correctness, and do gooders actually make me feel worse, as opposed to actually helping to ease the burden of existential suffering. Why don't these cunts just fucking die and leave us all alone in peace? They are so fucking stupid that they can't even understand that this forum actually helps people, as opposed to harming them. Paradoxically, the closure of this site will actually raise the suicide rate, due to the loss of all the wonderful, caring, supportive and understanding people on this forum, who care so much for each other.
I don't know what else to say here. Words fail me

58 years old. Suffered from clinical depression since a young age. Tried all the crap they threw at me: meds, so-called therapy, toxic positivity bullshit etc, etc. IT DOESN'T FUCKING WORK ! Why don't these goody two shoes pro- life shitstains realise that they only create more harm for people like us as opposed to actually helping ? It's not fucking rocket science after all.

hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst… i'm getting ready to say goodbye to this honest and smart community, but i hope to see you all again - nothing else interests me

ps. would removing all methods and sources help?
- maybe focusing on mental health and philosophy
- renaming it to 'sanctioned choices'

this would remove the need for VPN / TOR, and make it visible on all search engines

Politicians shouldn't have anything to do with this, they need to back the fuck off and do their job instead of putting their noses into what people are reading. Getting information is not a crime, I should have the right to read whatever the fuck I want. Absolutely ridiculous.

Brief comment here—it'll probably be insufficient, but I'd like to get ahead of any impending sitewide panic attack.

The immediate threat from this bill is essentially zero. Contacting a bunch of politicians to scream curses at them will do a lot more harm. I suggest people spend the time between now & when the next Congress starts (January 3, 2023) sorting out who is the correct congressperson for them to contact, and what is the best way to approach them, if any.

Honestly, the smartest thing for us to do is probably to hide behind the massive telecommunications lobby. They are the people who technically "furnish" communications between users, after all. It's not you or me. Your ISP doesn't want to be held liable for every dumb suggestion you may post that results in someone's injury or death.

Imagine having to append a list like this to every post on every forum:

Do not eat silica packet.
Attempting to kill yourself may result in death.
Please drink SN responsibly.
Cape does not allow wearer to fly.
Caution: contents may be extremely stupid.

Yes, of course it will end. This is undeniable. We do live in a pro torture and suffering society after all, there is nothing that anyone can do about this. It's simply the reality. But everything in life must end eventually. All that I wish for is the end of everything for me. People see suicide as being a terrible thing but the truth is that it's not. It's freedom from all pain and there is no benefit to trying to force people to exist. Only death could ever bring relief from this hellish world.

Since the problem is a change to US legislation, the administrators could host SS on servers in a different country where there are no laws against talking about suicide online. Perhaps outside the European Union and the UK.

I thought SS was already hosted outside the US? Or did I imagine reading this?

I am sad for the population of blocked countries. As long as SS is hosted outside them, though, access should be the same as for Australia now, I think. Still, I hope the US will grow out of telling people what to do with their own bodies.

let's all ignore the elephant in the room: in a few months, 5 billion people have the potential to die in a nuclear war

society should instead on focus on pro-lifers and their priorities - 'happy thoughts :)'

every country in the world should focus on putin, 100%
what do they do? US is focusing on disrespecting the basic human right to choose
politicians should check their priorities

You will not be in trouble. Two major reasons:

1) Even if this bill were to pass, it would apply only to people posting from within the United States.

2) If this bill did pass, it would be quickly blocked in federal court. This is because it runs afoul of a law that already exists, the Communications Decency Act of 1996–specifically section 230. I'll let the Electronic Frontier Foundation explain:

Why CDA 230 Is So Important

EFF sometimes provides a legal defense to people and organizations. I suspect it would probably do so in this case, so here's their contact info, just in case. But I also believe the issue won't come to that.

Consider that essentially all the "instructions" we make available here come out of either the "Peaceful Pill Handbook" or "Final Exit." You know who sends out that info a hell of a lot more often than we do? Amazon.com. I've seen "Final Exit" in libraries, for that matter. As fun as we are for certain web slacktivists to kick, law enforcement agencies are not run for the fun of it. They have to at least pretend to make sense, and it makes no sense for them to prosecute you and me for talking about SN, but not Jeff Bezos. And Bezos' SN-bundle-peddling ass isn't going anywhere.

Do whatever you need to do: get a VPN, start using the Tor browser. Definitely keep your mouth shut about identifying information. Remember that when the New York Times couldn't figure out how else to punish this site's owners, they doxxed them. But also don't go running around screaming about how we're any more doomed than usual, because we aren't.
I got a message from someone yesterday wanting to chat. This person wanted me to procure a gun for them. Never respond to such messages!
Yikes. Straw-buying weapons for people is a whole other thing. Any government in the world will take you down for that one. Freaky that somebody even asked.

And would hosting the website outside the territory where the United States has jurisdiction solve part of the problem? Or would access by US residents to the website, wherever it is, also constitute a crime under certain circumstances under the future law?

And would those of us outside the U.S. be in violation of the new law only if the site is hosted in U.S. territory or would it depend on the laws of the state where we live? or both at the same time?

Right now I am convinced that I am not violating any law of Spain, but I do not know if I am doing it of the U.S. What I can not do is to learn each of the laws of each of the countries where the websites I visit are hosted. What a headache!

For the time being I will continue accessing and expressing myself normally on the web and we will see later how events develop. No doubt when the time comes I will have to comply with the law if it clearly states that my attitude is a crime wherever I live. I just hope to find out in time.

//

Només espero assebentar-me amb prou temps.

I've already started a draft of my correspondence. There will be many edits before I send it off.

People like us are constantly getting the short end of the stick. Constantly being kicked around and smashed in the mouth. Getting pushed down and pissed on.

Then we retreat to our corners and cry like a helpless infant. Fuck that.

I'm going to use my voice in any way I can, with whatever time I have left. I've wanted to do something like this since rumblings of possible legislation began, but I wasn't sure what the site owners wanted. Now that they've asked us to act, they won't have to ask me twice.
